PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 WORK COVERED BY CONTRACT DOCUMENTS
1.1.1 Project Description
The work consists of furnishing all plant, labor, and materials for construction of earthen berms, excavation of the failed landside levee embankments, rebuilding and slope flattening of the landside levee embankments, and any incidental related work according to the specifications and plans. The project limits are as shown on the plans. The estimated value of the work is over $10,000,000.
1.1.2 Required Order of Work
The Contractor will be required to complete the following order of work for this project.
a. Excavation for the each of the seven excavation segments will be required and each segment backfilled with compacted earthen materials to the lines and grades as shown on the drawings before concentrating on the berm sections. The Contractor will be required to complete the excavation and backfill along one levee segment before beginning another segment for excavation. The Contractor can work on two segments simultaniously if there is available equipment and manpower as approved by the Contracting Officer. The Contractor shall work continuously on each segment once excavation has began until all backfill is completed to minimize the time the excavations are open. See restrictions in Section 31 23 00.00 12 and as stated herein on the plans and specificatons. The Contractor will be simultaneously placing earthen materials from the levee excavations into the berm areas except those materials that qualify for levee embankment backfill. The Contractor will be required to backfill continuously behind the excavations with borrow from the riverside borrow pit. The contractor shall understand all backfill requirements, especially in areas where excavation is adjacent to berm construction and account for these conditions when laying out the work and include in the excavation and other plans required for this project. At the completion of the excavation and backfilling for all excavation segments, the contractor can complete the slope flattening in areas outside the excavation limits and berms by his order of work and as approved by the Contracting Officer.
1.1.3 Location
The work shall be located between baseline stations 19/50+00 to 14/50+00 as indicated on the drawings. The Contracting Officer's Representative will be available to show the exact location of the work at the two organized site visits.
SECTION 01 11 00.00 11 Page 2
1.2 EXISTING WORK
In addition to "FAR 52.236-9, Protection of Existing Vegetation, Structures, Equipment, Utilities, and Improvements":
a. Remove or alter existing work in such a manner as to prevent injury or damage to any portions of the existing work which remain.
b. Repair or replace portions of existing work which have been altered during construction operations to match existing or adjoining work, as approved by the Contracting Officer. At the completion of operations, existing work shall be in a condition equal to or better than that which existed before new work started.
