Temporary welds are only to be made by welders qualified for permanent work as specified in these specifications. Conduct preheating for temporary welds as required by AWS D1.6/D1.6M for permanent welds. In making temporary welds, arcs shall not be struck in other than weld locations. Remove each temporary weld and grind flush with adjacent surfaces after serving its purpose.
(3) Tack Welds - Subject tack welds that are to be incorporated into the permanent work to the same quality requirements as the permanent welds; clean and thoroughly fuse them with permanent welds. Perform preheating as specified above for temporary welds. Multiple-pass tack welds shall have cascaded ends. Remove defective tack welds before permanent welding.
3.1.2 Gallery Seal Demolition
Prior to the installation of the gallery seal the contractor shall remove the existing 1/4" x 15" stainless steel plates with rubber seal backing and anchors as indicated in the drawings. There will also be a small amount of previously installed hydrophilic grout in the area of the joint to remove. The designated rectangular slot shall be saw cut with a diamond-blade concrete saw at the locations and to the depths shown on the drawings. Sawing shall not damage adjacent concrete, equipment, or other features. Other small hand chisels and grinders may be used as necessary to remove the concrete after saw cutting. Due to the geometry of the gallery, select areas may require chiseling to provide the specified rectangular slot. The side walls and bottom of the excavation shall be reasonably smooth with any deviation being less than 1/8-inch. Cuttings, concrete, and water shall be filtered in accordance with SECTION 01 57 20.00 28 ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION paragraph entitled "Wastewater".
The existing concrete may be expected to range in strength from 3,000 to 6,000 psi. Large aggregate, reinforcing steel and metal debris may be encountered during cutting.
Electrical conduits and cables mounted to the gallery walls at the monolith joint shall be temporarily unfastened and supported to allow for access to areas requiring saw cutting and/or chiseling. Reattach conduit after gallery seal installation is complete.
3.1.3 Modifications To Fiberglass Grating
Minor modifications to existing fiberglass grating and steel grating supports will be required in order to accommodate the Gallery Seal.
3.1.4 Gallery Seal Installation
The saw cut channel shall be cleaned by the Contractor, inspected by the Contracting Officer's Representative, and then completely filled with the government provided rectangular hydrophilic seals. The Contractor shall provide a 24hr notice to the COR to notify that the concrete excavation is ready to be inspected prior to the installation of the seals. Cut the seal material as necessary to achieve the proper lengths of pieces to fill the entire saw cut channel. The seals are 2" wide by 4" deep and can be up to 1/8" undersize in depth and width. Ends shall be cut square and smoothly so full section contact is achieved at butt joints. The Contractor shall ensure that the seal fits tightly into the channel.
3.1.5 Retention Plate Installation
The contractor shall immediately install the retention plates over the waterstop seal as shown in the drawings. All prep work such as drilling for anchor bolts and sizing of the plates shall be completed prior to installing the waterstop seal. The plates shall be dry fit to ensure bolt holes are in alignment and lengths are correct prior to installing the hydrophilic seal as shown on the drawings.
The HSS holddowns over the retention plates shall be situated such that existing grout holes as indicated by the COR remain accessible after installation is complete as indicated on the drawings, the holddowns can be shifted enough from the uniform spacing to keep the grout holes exposed.
3.2 DRAIN PIPE SEAL INSTALLATION
3.2.1 Concrete Excavation
Excavate concrete in the floor of the gallery as indicated, so that there is access to the end of the drain pipe and sufficient clearance to install the Drain Pipe Seal. Excavations shall be saw cut with a concrete saw at the locations and to the dimensions shown on the plans. Sawing shall not damage adjacent concrete, equipment, or other features. The side walls and bottom of the excavation shall be reasonably smooth with any deviation being less than 1/8-inch. Cuttings, concrete, and water shall be contained and disposed of in an approved manner. The existing concrete may be expected to range in strength from 3,000 to 6,000 psi. Reinforcing steel and metal debris may be encountered during cutting.
3.2.2 Video Inspection
After completion of the saw cutting, the Contractor shall perform a video inspection of the drain pipe. The video inspection shall be performed in the presence of a Government representative. The Contractor shall provide the COR with a 24hr notice prior to the inspection. Video inspection equipment shall be specifically designed for video recording of horizontal pipes. At minimum it shall be comprised of a compact camera unit with integral light, distance measuring device, centralizers, viewing screen for the operator, and recording capability. The camera shall function both under water and in the dry. The entire length of the straight segment of the pipe shall be inspected, with the entire inspection recorded. The exact distance from the gallery wall to the monolith joint shall be noted during the inspection, as this is where the seal has to be centered when installed.
Submit a CD-ROM with a video recording of the inspection in .MP4, .WAV, or .AVI format.
The Contractor shall be aware that during a navigation lockage additional leakage may occur that could make the inspection more difficult. It is recommended that the video inspection be coordinated with navigation traffic.
3.2.3 Pipe Cleaning e
Prior to installing the seal clean the drain pipe with a stiff bristled wire brush. The pipe shall be cleaned from the outlet to up to the joint, including the area where the seal will be placed. The wire brush shall be of an adequate stiffness and diameter to remove any debris or build up on the inside of the pipe, without causing damage to the pipe. After cleaning the pipe video inspect it to determine that there are no obstructions that would interfere with installation of the seal.
3.2.4 Seal Installation
Prior to installing the seal, permanently attach a cloth or fiberglass tape measure to the end of the seal pipe. With the tape attached, lay out the seal and tape on the gallery floor and mark on the tape the distance at which when installed the seal will be centered on the monolith 4/6 joint. Install the seal by attaching the Contractor furnished sections of PVC pipe to the seal and pushing it into the pipe from the outlet end where the concrete excavation occurred. It is anticipated that manual pushing by hand will provide adequate force to install the pipe. Ensure that the seal is installed the correct distance so that it is centered on the joint. Provide temporary bracing to ensure position of the seal for a minimum of 3 calendar days.
3.2.5 Access Cover Fabrication And Installation
The Contractor shall verify the cover fits the cut out in the concrete as shown on the drawings with a 1/4" tolerance, and install as shown on the drawings.
