1.2.7 Select Granular Material

1.2.7.1 Structural Fill

a. Dense-Graded Aggregate should be used under all structures and pavements, and conform to following sieve analysis:

Sieve Size Percent Passing by Weight

1 inch 100

3/4 inches 90 - 100

3/8 inches 55 - 75

1/4 inches 40 - 60

No. 10 20 - 30

No. 200 0-5

b. Fracture of rounded rock must be determined according to ASTM D5821.

Provide at least one fractured face on 70 percent of the particles retained on the 1/4 inch sieve.

c. Submit all aggregate tests prior to placement.

1.2.8 Initial Backfill Material

Initial backfill consists of select granular material or satisfactory materials free from rocks 1 inches or larger in any dimension or free from rocks of such size as recommended by the pipe manufacturer, whichever is smaller.

1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

a. Hand-Auger borings are shown on the drawings. Surface elevations are as indicated on the drawings. The subsoil investigation concluded that 18 to 24 inches of Sandy SILT (fill) was underlain by hard rock.

Hard rock will be encountered at 18 to 24 inches below existing surface elevations, as shown on the drawings, within the area of the new building excavation. Ground water is not anticipated to be encountered. Pipes or other artificial obstructions, except those indicated, are not anticipated to be encountered. These data represent the best subsurface information available; however, variations may exist in the subsurface between boring locations.

Rock excavation in the area of the new pre-engineered metal building is minimally expected. Careful note should be given to drawing C-003 and the sections and details provided therein.

Sections A, B, and C demonstrate the new foundation and footings for the new building and contrast with the approximate location of bedrock and elevation 1370.

b. No explorations were performed outside of the building footprint, trenching and other excavations outside of the building footprint may encounter rock in the limits of excavation.

SECTION 31 00 00.00 25 Page 5

(1) Rock excavation for installation of fence posts shall be per paragraph 3.2, POST INSTALLATION of section 32 31 13.53 25, HIGH-SECURITY CHAIN LINK FENCES AND GATES. Depth of rock for fence post installation is assumed at 18 to 24 inches below existing surface elevations, similar to what is expected for the new building per paragraph 1.3.a above.

(2) Rock excavation for the ductbank work is only minimally expected to provide for proper sloping of the installed ductbank.

Rock depth is anticipated at 18" below existing surface elevation. Reference Details 1 & 2 of E-502 and section

33 71 02.00 25, UNDERGROUND ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION.

(3) Depth of rock in the area of the CMU wall is assumed at 18 to 24 inches below existing surface elevations, similar to what is expected for the new building per paragraph 1.3.a above. Rock excavation for the CMU wall is assumed to only be required per the Contractor provided shop drawings detailing the footings and/or foundation of the CMU wall noted in section 04 20 00.00 25, MASONRY.

c. For bidding purposes, assume that rock excavation will be required for all excavations greater than 18" below existing surface elevations.

1.3.1 Classification of Excavation

1.3.1.1 Common Excavation

Include common excavation with the satisfactory removal and disposal of all materials not classified as rock excavation.

1.3.1.2 Rock Excavation

Submit notification of encountering rock in the project. Include rock excavation with blasting, excavating, grading, disposing of material classified as rock, and the satisfactory removal and disposal of boulders 1/2 cubic yard or more in volume; solid rock; rock material that is in ledges, bedded deposits, and unstratified masses, which cannot be removed without systematic drilling and blasting; firmly cemented conglomerate deposits possessing the characteristics of solid rock impossible to remove without systematic drilling and blasting; and hard materials (see Definitions). Include the removal of any concrete or masonry structures, except pavements, exceeding 1/2 cubic yard in volume that may be encountered in the work in this classification. If at any time during excavation, the Contractor encounters material that may be classified as rock excavation, uncover such material and notify the Contracting Officer.

Do not proceed with the excavation of this material until the Contracting Officer has classified the materials as common excavation or rock excavation and has taken cross sections as required. Failure on the part of the Contractor to uncover such material, notify the Contracting Officer, and allow ample time for classification and cross sectioning of the undisturbed surface of such material will cause the forfeiture of the Contractor's right of claim to any classification or volume of material to be paid for other than that allowed by the Contracting Officer for the areas of work in which such deposits occur.

1.3.2 Blasting

Blasting will not be permitted. Remove material in an approved manner.
