SOIL BORING DATA

02/16

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 Soil Classification

The soil was visually classified in the field according to the "Unified Soil Classification System" and described utilizing ASTM D 2488 Standard Practice for Description and Identification of Soils (Visual-Manual Procedure). While it is believed that borings accurately indicate subsurface conditions for boring locations on the date taken, the Government assumes no responsibility for actual conditions which may be encountered in execution of Contract. Should the Contractor rely, for any purpose, upon the accuracy or completeness of soil borings, or boring logs thereof, he does so at his own risk. The geotechnical report, including soil boring drilling logs and data are provided with the design package.

All samples contained at the end of this SECTION were obtained on various dates as designated on the respective boring. Geotechnical analysis data is available for review at Norfolk District, 803 Front Street, Norfolk, VA 23510 (Attention: Jennifer Spitz, telephone 757-201-7098).

1.2 Sampling Method

All boring samples were performed in accordance with ASTM D 1586 Standard Test Method for Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and Split-Barrel Sampling of Soils and obtained utilizing a CME 550 All-Terrain mounted drill rig using 3 1/4-inch I.D. hollow stem auger procedures. Soil samples were obtained with a standard 2-inch outer diameter and 24-inch long split-spoon sampler driven with a 140-lb automatic hammer falling 30 inches. The number of blows required to drive the sampler for each six

(6) inch penetration increment was recorded.

1.3 Soil Consistency Determination

Estimated consistencies (med. stiff, soft, etc.) are from Terzaghi & Peck "Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice".

1.4 Boring Elevations and Locations

All boring elevations and locations are approximated. Boring logs are shown at the end of this section.

SECTION 01 11 00 Page 2

The contractor shall submit 2 copies of visual and audio recording.

1.3 WORK COVERED BY CONTRACT DOCUMENTS

1.3.1 Project Description

The purpose of this project is to protect the Amherst County gravity sewer line by stabilizing a segment of the James River banks and shoreline (shown in the contract drawings) that has severely eroded. The work includes performing pre and post construction survey of the project area, performing pre and post construction CCTV inspection video, excavating, clearing, grubbing, grading, placement of fill material, placement of Class II ( VDOTRBS)riprap/armor stone, placement of geotextile fabric, placement of marine filter mattresses, and any incidental work related to the construction of this project.

1.3.2 Location

The work shall be located in Amherst County, Virginia off the James River, as indicated on the contract drawings.

1.4 SPECIAL WORK REQUIREMENTS

1.4.1 Mussel Survey and Relocation

The Contractor shall hire a qualified Biologist to conduct a Mussel Survey and Relocation. Refer to Section 01 56 00 MUSSEL RELOCATION REQUIREMENTS for guidelines and requirements.

1.4.2 Existing Manholes and Sanitary Sewer Pipe Location and Condition

The Contractor shall confirm the location and condition of the manholes and sanitary sewer line in order to prevent damage to the utility. The manholes are currently mark by white PVC poles (an image of the markings is shown in the construction drawings). The Contractor shall confirm the locations and conditions of the manholes, maintain the PVC markings, and shall ensure that a three (3) foot radius buffer from the center of manhole covers are maintained to protect the manholes from damage. If the C ontractor damages any structures or utilities in the project vicinity during the construction of the project, the Contractor shall repair and replace any damages at his own expense and at no cost to the Government.

To reduce potential damage to the sanitary sewer pipeline, the proposed revetment shall not overlie the existing ground above the pipeline. The contractor shall not excavate within the sanitary sewage pipeline easement boundaries.

1.4.2.1 Sewer Line Cleaning

The contractor is required to clean the sewer line before Pre-Construction Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV). Refer to SECTION 33 01 35 SEWER LINE CLEANING for more guidance on the sewer line cleaning.

1.4.2.2 Closed-Circuit Television Requirements

To ensure that the Contractor does not impact or damage the existing sewer pipeline, the Contractor shall conduct a Pre-Construction Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Sewer Pipeline Inspection Video to confirm the overall condition of the pipe prior to the start of any construction work. After

SECTION 01 11 00 Page 3 the completion of all construction work, the Contractor shall also perform a Post-Construction Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Sewer Pipeline Inspection Video. The post-construction CCTV inspection shall confirm that no cracks or moments of pipeline and joints occurred as a result of construction activities. There can be no standing fluid in the sewer line during the CCTV inspections; if there is standing water the CCTV inspection will be rejected and it much be re-done at no additional cost to the Government.

The television inspection shall be performed one section of pipeline at a time. A footage counter device, which measures the distance traveled by the camera in the sewer, shall be accurate to plus or minus 2 feet in 1,000 feet. The Contractor shall provide the Government and the Amherst County Service Authority copy of a color Pre and Post-Installation TV Inspection Video on DVD that can be replayed in a standard DVD player device. The audio portion of the composite digital video shall be sufficiently free from electrical interference and background noise to provide complete intelligibility of the oral report. The camera image shall be down the center axis of the pipe when the camera is in motion.

The Contractor is required to provide a 360 degrees radial close up view of the pipe interior using a camera with pan and tilt capabilities for 8-inch diameter and larger pipes. Points of interest shall also be digitally recorded and shall include, but not be limited to, defective joints, ovality, debris, sediment, cracked pipes, holes, or blockages.

The Contractor shall develop and keep printed location records that clearly show the location in relation to an adjacent manhole of each infiltration point observed during inspection. In addition, record other points of significance such as locations of building sewers, unusual conditions, roots, storm sewer conditions, broken pipe, presence of scale and corrosion, and other discernible features.

The Contractor shall also take digital photographs or digital video stills of any defects or points of interest recorded on the inspection report. If no defects are present provide one still image of pipe for information purposes.

In addition the CCTV shall be taken by a pan and tilt pipe inspection camera that pans 275 degrees and rotates 360 degrees for close up view showing the sewer pipeline condition.

Inspection shall be performed in accordance with NASSCO's Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program (PACP) or/and Manhole Assessment and Certification Program (MACP).
