Section C - Descriptions and Specifications
AU51, AMMUNITION, 38 SUPERCOMP
SPECIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
The contractor shall furnish ammunition in accordance with the specifications listed below.
AU51, AMMUNITION, 38 SuperComp, 115-135gr FMJ, USPSA Major, Match, Custom Loaded.
13a. PROJECTILE: The projectile shall be a FMJ, .355 nominal diameter with a weight minimum of 115 grains and maximum of 135 grains. All projectiles must derive from a single OEM lot. Evaluation criteria – inspection, accuracy standards
13b. CASE: New, unfired .38 SuperComp brass case obtained from a single OEM lot. Overall case length of 0.895” with a tolerance of + or - 0.001”. Evaluation criteria – inspection, measurement; Pass / Fail.
13c. PRIMER: Factory Specifications primers obtained from a single OEM lot that meet performance requirements. Evaluation criteria – accuracy, velocity and function standards.
13d. PROPELLENT: The manufacturer shall establish the powder type and charge weight to meet performance requirements and maintain chamber pressures within SAAMI recommendations. All powder for each lot of ammunition must derive from a single OEM lot. The powder used shall not be overly sensitive to atmospheric conditions so as to severely degrade accuracy, nor cause large variables in velocities or excess chamber pressures while operating in temperatures ranging from 30F thru 115F. Evaluation criteria – accuracy, velocity and function standards.
13e. ASSEMBLED CARTRIDGE: Cartridge overall length should not exceed 1.265” nor be less than 1.240” when measured from the tip of the projectile to the base of the cartridge. Crimp measured at the case mouth shall be 0.376” diameter or smaller. Evaluation criteria– Inspection measurement; Pass / Fail
13f. LIVE FIRE TESTING: All candidate ammunition will be fired through a 5.5 inch, STI bull barrel mounted separately from the firearm in a fixture to test for accuracy. The ammunition will then be fired through assembled pistol(s) to test the ability of the ammunition to reliably function the firearm.
13g. ACCURACY STANDARDS: Five groups; ten-rounds per group, fired at paper target placed 50 yards from the muzzle. Measurements are to be computed from center to center of the widest shots (extreme spread) in each of these ten round groups. Extreme spread of these five groups, compiled and averaged, shall not exceed 1.75 inches, while the extreme spread of any individual shot group may not exceed 2.25 inches. Evaluation standard – Pass / Fail.
13h. MUZZLE VELOCITY: With the ammunition conditioned at 70 degrees, plus or minus 5 degrees, and starting with an ambient temperature bore/barrel, the velocity of three consecutive rounds are averaged and shall produce a power factor (PF) of not less than 172 and not more than 175 using the USPSA method of calculating PF (projectile weight X velocity / 1000 = PF). Velocity will be measured using a chronograph with the center of the chronograph array placed 15 feet from the muzzle. Evaluation standard – pass / fail.
13i. FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Ammunition must burn clean and leave minimal residue.
Ammunition must function reliably from assembled firearms and there must be zero malfunctions that are attributable to the ammunition and zero ammunition defects. The function reliability test will be conducted with one or more of the following pistols; 1911 single stack and/or STI 2011. Evaluation criteria – zero ammunition related malfunctions and zero ammunition defects. Pass/Fail.
13j. PACKAGING: The cartridges shall be assembled in identifiable lots. Ammunition will be packaged 50 rounds per box, and 20 boxes (1000 rounds) per case. Each case, and individual box in that case, shall be labeled with the lot number, caliber, projectile weight and projectile type.
