Upgrade to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Tool Performance for Combustion Analysis in High Performance Computing Environments 30 January 2019
C.1 Background
The US Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Propulsion Division, conducts basic and applied research enabling the development of key technologies that can address far-term science and technology challenges envisioned for the future battlefield. Energy and Propulsion, is one thrust area conducting exploratory research in adaptive propulsion platforms for existing and novel internal and gas-turbine engines, to expand its performance for self-sustainability and high power density under extreme battlefield operating conditions. An important component is the development of novel physics based models and simulation capabilities not only to understand the fundamental physics, but also to explore the design space for next generation vehicle propulsion platforms.
C.2 Objective
The Contractor shall perform technical services towards improved performance of an existing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tool available at ARL. The tool’s primary use is for the analysis of vehicle engine combustion. The ARL has access to a recent improvement of the tool, but this improvement is in a preliminary form that is only applicable to test cases for which combustion heat release is lower than in operational vehicle engines, and is not yet directly applicable to mission-relevant work. The Contractor shall provide an upgraded version of the CFD Tool software so that it will be directly applicable to mission-relevant work.
C.3 Requirement
C.3.1 The Contractor shall evaluate the current CFD Tool software in use at ARL to establish baseline performance in the functional areas of fidelity and run time, while performing test case simulations.
C.3.2 The Contractor shall coordinate with the Technical Point of Contact (TPOC) to provide guidance in the form of mathematical theory and algorithm strategy that will enable modification of the base CFD Tool software so that it is applicable to engine-relevant heat release operational configurations.
C.3.3 The Contractor shall modify the existing CFD tool available at ARL, to at a minimum meet the below specifications in the relevant functional areas:
C.3.3.1 The Contractor shall produce a demonstrated 30% higher fidelity using the baseline criteria established by the Contractor during its evaluations of the CFD tool (listed in C.3.1), while performing simulations at engine-relevant heat release operational configurations. The Contractor shall ensure fidelity is compared to real-world data identified by the Engine Combustion Network, a U.S. research consortium that has gathered the necessary experimental data for such evaluations.
C.3.3.2 The Contractor shall produce a demonstrated 50% reduction of run time using the baseline criteria established by the Contractor during its evaluations of the CFD tool (listed in C.3.1), while performing simulations at engine-relevant heat release operational configurations.
C.4 Deliverables
C.4.1 The Contractor shall submit a final report which details the efforts performed under this contract, lessons learned, and recommendations for further modifications to the CFD tool no later than seven (7) days after the end of the contract’s period of performance. The Contractor shall participate in a final report teleconference meeting with the TPOC to be scheduled by the TPOC no later than thirty (30) days after the end of the contract’s performance. The meeting topics will include, the submitted final report, progress of the contract, performance of the Contractor, any problems that have arisen and how they have been resolved, any recommendations for further modifications, and any questions/clarifications required by the TPOC.
C.4.2 The Contractor shall submit all Technical Notes and other forms of written documentation which were produced during the performance of this contract to the TPOC no later than seven (7) days after the end of the contract’s period of performance.
