Technical Requirements for Closed-Cycle Flow Cryostat
The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and Electron Devices Directorate (SEDD) Quantum Science Branch conducts research on quantum networking. Coupling trapped ion qubits to photonic qubits requires use of optical cavities. Low temperatures are required to mitigate the effects of charge migration on optical cavity dielectric surfaces. ARL requires one (1) closed-cycle, Helium flow cryostat system for this application. It shall have the following properties:
Continuous cooling performance.
· Completely closed-cycle operation. No loss of helium gas during normal operation.
· Cooling power at four point five (4.5) Kelvin shall be greater than zero point two (0.2) Watt.
· Cooling power at 10.0 Kelvin shall be greater than zero point five (0.5) Watt.
· Temperature instability at seven point zero (7.0) Kelvin shall be less than zero point zero one (0.01) Kelvin with feedback.
· Heat shield temperature shall be below 40 Kelvin while dissipating 30 Watts.
At four point two (4.2) Kelvin the motion of the cooling platform relative to a supporting optics table shall meet the following criteria. Documentation supporting this specification shall be submitted with quote.
· Less than 10 nanometers (nm) root mean square (RMS) amplitude in x, y and z directions one (1) hertz (Hz) to one (1) kilohertz (kHz).
· Drift in x, y, z no more than +/- 10 nm over 100 seconds.
· Drift in x, y, z no more than +/- 60 nm over 1000 seconds.
Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) cryostat performance criteria.
· Tolerant of baking to 150 degrees Celsius (C) for three (3) days.
· Two (2) conflat flange (CF) two point seventy-five (2.75) inches (”) ports for attachment of government-supplied ion pump, non-evaporable getter and ultra-high vacuum pressure gauges.
· Vacuum attainable at room temperature shall be less than five (5) x 10^-11 Torr assuming two (2) liter per second conductance from cryostat to government-supplied ion pump.
· Two (2) calibrated Cernox Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD) with four (4)-wire sense harnesses; One (1) mounted to four (4) Kelvin stage and one (1) mounted to 40 Kelvin stage.
· Two (2) 100 watt heaters; one (1) mounted to four (4) Kelvin cold stage and one (1) mounted to 40 Kelvin stage.
· Cryostat shall be fabricated using 316 stainless steel.
· Feedthroughs in cryostat as follows:
· One (1) low-capacitance feedthrough for faraday cup (< 30 picofared).
· Two (2) high-power radio-frequency (RF) feedthroughs, 50 Ohm, 12.6 Gigahertz (GHz), one (1) watt peak power, one thousandths (1e-3) duty cycle over one (1) second, S11 < three (3) decibel (dB).
· Two (2) low-power radio-frequency (RF) feedthroughs, 50 Ohm, 100 Megahertz (MHz), 200 Megawatt (mW) peak power, continuous duty cycle, S11 < three (3) dB.
· 24 high-voltage feedthroughs, +/- 1000 volt, one (1) ampere peak current, capacitance < one millionth (1e-6) farad, one thousandths (1e-3) duty cycle over one (1) second.
· Four (4) direct-current (DC) feedthroughs, 10 volt, five (5) ampere, continuous duty cycles.
· 10 spare wire anchor points for heat sinking to 40 Kelvin stage.
· All wires heat sunk to 40 Kelvin shield, designed to minimize heat conductance and wound to reduce inductive pickup.
· optical access on octagonal geometry as follows:
· Six (6) conflat flange (CF) ports on six (6) of eight (8) sides of octagon.
· Two (2) conflat flange (CF) ports on top and bottom of octagon.
· Cryogen flow shall be routed to maximize cooling capacity at 40 Kelvin stage.
· Details of cryostat geometry including feedthrough placement, optical access locations and heat shield design to be designed in consult with technical point of contact (TPOC) after award.
Support Infrastructure.
· Cooling supplied to cryostat by helium transfer line with standard bayonet.
· Power is 208 volts alternating current (VAC), three (3)-phase, 60 Hz.
· Cooling by chilled water.
· Rack to support compressors and other power electronics minimum height of two (2)” above floor.
· Mechanical support for cryo cooler and liquid helium transfer line to facilitate movement between cryostats in a laboratory setting.
· Lakeshore Model 336 four (4)-channel temperature controller.
· The distance from compressor to four (4) Kelvin cold head shall be 20 meters.
· The distance from the Gifford-McMahon or Pulse Tube cooler to the cryostat shall be at least 3 (three) meters.
· Pressure regulators, valves, pumps and hoses as needed to: a) charge system with helium gas, b) connect bayonet to cryostat, and c) operate cryostat on a day-to-day basis.
· On-site installation by technician.
· Government will supply suitable electrical power, chilled water and pure Helium gas (99.999%).
