The Contractor shall provide, install, and provide training for an Electromagnetic Forming (Magneform) Machine to JMTC. The machine shall be installed on the mezzanine floor of Building 212 of the Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center of Rock Island Arsenal

4.1 Electromagnetic Forming Process: The Electromagnetic Forming process is a manufacturing forming process where electrical current is stored and then released from a capacitor bank through a coil.

Discharging the electrical energy through a coil around the inside or outside of a metal tube causes a magnetic field in the part itself. The magnetic field created by the coil coupled with the induced magnetic field in the part creates a force which reduces a tube-shaped part diameter, or the force expands the tube-shaped part diameter. Forming of the part occurs while the part is in a visco-plastic state. Expansion of the tubular work piece occurs when the coil is placed inside the part. Compression of the tubular work piece occurs when the coil surrounds the outside of the part. Propulsion of the work piece occurs when the coil is placed outside the part, and the part is pushed away from the coil (into a die, or against a fixture).

Traditionally, this manufacturing process is used when a larger metal tube is compressed onto a slightly smaller metal tube. The larger diameter tube or part is deformed, and joined onto the slightly smaller diameter inner tube or part. The forming/joining of the two parts occurs very quickly (in a matter of micro-seconds). The process avoids direct contact with the parts, thereby leaving no marks on the parts created by tooling in traditional mechanical forming operations.

4.2 Machine Components: The contractor shall provide a electromagnetic forming machine consisting of the following components:

4.2.1 High Voltage Power Supply/Transformer

4.2.2 Capacitor Bank

4.2.3 Circuit Solenoid/Switch

4.2.7 Fixture

4.2.8 Machine Control

4.3 Performance Specifications: The equipment shall be exhibit the following performance specifications:

4.3.1 Maximum Electromagnetic Energy Output: The electromagnetic forming machine shall impart a maximum electromagnetic pressure pulse of kinetic energy of at least 16 kilo- Joules into a work piece per discharge. Repeatability of energy discharged will be within 2% of a constant energy output selection. The energy selected at the control, and discharged from the machine will be in 1 percent increments (or less) of the maximum energy output (resolution).

4.3.2 Charging Interval for Second Discharge: After an initial maximum energy discharge, the electromagnetic forming machine will take 10 seconds or less for the capacitors to re-charge completely, allowing for the second maximum energy discharge from the electromagnetic forming machine.

4.3.3 Power Supply: The power distribution panel shall contain high quality components such as solid state relays, transformers and forced ventilation /cooling.

4.3.4 Capacitors: The electro-magnetic forming machine shall contain (4), 120 Microfarad (μF) sized capacitors, or larger (rated at 8.3 kilo-Volts/kV).
