Description of Services or Supplies: The current Olympus mercury lamp system (HBO System)

fielded with the ALS has been problematic from the beginning. The legacy mercury lamp relies upon mirrors and focusing apertures to refine the light transmitted to the microscope stage. The mirrors and apertures require frequent adjustment especially after the ALS has been driven from one location to another. The physical process of adjusting the knobs on the lamp to produce acceptable illumination of samples is problematic at best.

Reasons for Authority Cited: A:
Reasons for Authority Cited: B: The 120LED system is a liquid light guide, which does not require alignment, nor frequent bulb replacement, and the system lasts more than 25,000-hrs. Additionally, the LED system provides a consistent uniform light with the broadest spectrum possible, maximizing the fluorescence illumination. Cost comparison can be found for HBO, X-cite 120 PCQ systems, and X-cite 120LED systems. Other company cost comparisons are similar.
