Fabrication and Installation – Questions and Answers Vol. II
Q1. Where should a proposal be submitted?
A1. Yes, please submit proposals to melissa.c.bays.civ@mail.mil.
Q2. Is there a loading dock at this location?
A2. Yes, however, currently there are many construction partners are still on-site. After 10 April 2019, there will be less construction contractors, however, we will still require 72-hour prior notice so that we can deconflict use of the loading dock and all the space between the loading dock and the Art Gallery
Q3. What are the dimensions of the largest egress we can load in through?
A3. 12’x12’. This will require use of our freight elevator and requires 48-hour prior notice so that we can deconflict it’s use.
Q4. Is there an area designated to stage a 53’ tractor trailer?
A4. Yes. Only in the loading dock area and for only a short time. If you require more than 2 hours of staging, you will need to notify the government. We will then stage you in the parking lot that is located some distance away from the building.
Q5. Is there special requirements for a tractor trailer to enter the facility?
A5. We require 72 hour notice of your timeline to allow us to deconflict arrival and on-site time with our other construction partners.
Q6. What are the hours we are allowed to work? Can we work through weekends during installation?
A6. Generally 0800-1600 hours. Expanded hours may be accommodated. Weekends are possible but will require coordination which has not yet been conducted.
Q7. Will we need to provide our own dumpster, if so is there an area designated to stage the dumpster?
A7. Yes. Dumpster staging area will most likely be in the service/delivery/maintenance area behind the museum, but this is subject to change based on construction schedule at the time of exhibit fabrication.
Q8. What percent complete would you consider the drawing package you provided?
A8. 100%
Q9. Is the Exhibit contractor required to finish the design set or just provide as built shop drawings to move into the fabrication stage?
A9. Drawing set is complete. Contractor just needs to provide shop drawings.
Q10. Are we able to substitute equal or greater systems for the Mila wall systems and Arakawa hanging systems?
A10. No
Q11. Can we price the walls as traditional museum exhibit walls i.e. MDF and wood construction?
A11. No Walls specified as Mila walls must be Mila walls.
Q12. Can we substitute MDF for the drywall on the few walls that are specified drywall?
A12. Yes
Q13. Can the kickplates that are mostly out of sight be substituted with something other than corian?
A13. No they must be as specified
Q14. Are the unframed artifacts needing to be framed by the contractor, if so can you specify the type of frame or system you wish to use?
A14. The unframed artifacts are being framed by the Army.
Q15. Is the army responsible for mounting all the artifacts in the cases or does that fall under the contractor’s scope?
A15. The contractor is required to mount the objects in the cases and to hang the artwork.
Q16. Will the army provide all the graphics in a print ready format?
A16. Graphics will be supplied as production ready files (InDesign and Illustrator)
Q17. Why are the dimensional letters offset in the drawing package, what is the intent with these letters, how are they mounted to the wall?
A17. The letters are to provide additional layer (3d look to exhibit) these will be provided as Illustrator file. Mounting method will be up to the contractor.
Q18. What are the wall finishes and construction on the existing building walls?
A18. Wall finishes are painted drywall and the ceiling is acoustic plaster. Any damage to the walls, floors or ceilings is the responsibility of the contractor installing the art/materials in the space.
Q19. Will the contractor need to provide their own lift equipment? Are their any restrictions as to what size and type of lift equipment we use?
A19. Yes. Maximum ground bearing pressure of the equipment must not exceed 65 psi. Additionally, this space is on the 2nd floor and the equipment must be able to fit within the cargo elevator.
Q20. What is the ceiling made from, drop ceiling or open frame work, etc?
A20. The ceiling is a star silent acoustic plaster mix that is color mixed as skim coated onto acoustic backing material on a framed system with ¾” drywall as base of the backing material.
Q21. What is the maximum ceiling load?
A21. Attachment to the celling is not allowed.
Q22. We assume the elevator weights are needed because we are not allowed to anchor into the floor of the building. Is this correct?
A22. That is correct.
Q23. What is the floor finish and substrate?
A23. The flooring is ¾” terrazzo poured onto 6” reinforced concrete slab on metal deck.
