About this file

This document provides the specifications for steel alloy AMS6484F. The specification covers steel bars, forgings, mechanical tubing, and forging stock composed of 0.80-1.8% chromium, 0.25-0.43% carbon, 1.65-2% nickel, and 0.2-0.3% molybdenum. The specification defines chemical composition limits, required mechanical properties including hardness and grain size, heat treatment processes, quality standards, and testing and certification requirements. Products governed by this specification are commonly used for aircraft parts under 3.5 inches thick requiring a through-hardening steel with a minimum hardness of 40 HRC after heat treatment.

The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of the Army Materiel Command Joint Munitions Command seeking quotes for an unspecified list of metals. Quotes must include pricing for each line item, expected delivery dates, and confirmation of Trade Agreement Act compliance and country of origin. Questions may be directed to the point of contact provided.

MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

AMS6484™ REV. F

Issued 1995-06 Revised 2022-11

Superseding AMS6484E

Steel, Bars, Forgings, Mechanical Tubing, and Forging Stock 0.80Cr - 1.8Ni - 0.25Mo (0.38 - 0.43C) (SAE 4340)

Normalized and Tempered (Composition similar to UNS G43406)

RATIONALE

AMS6484F is the result of a Five-Year Review and update of the specification. The revision updates the Title to match the scope, prohibits unauthorized exceptions (3.6, 4.4.5, 5.2.1.1, 8.7), updates composition testing (3.1, 3.1.2), updates heat treatment specification (3.2.1, 3.2.2), modifies Jominy requirements (3.3.3), updates macrostructure (3.3.1.1, 3.3.1.2, 8.8), updates decarburization test methods (3.4.4.5), acknowledges changes to AMS2301 (4.2.1, 4.4.4), adds note on stock removal (8.5), and allows prior revisions (8.6).

1. SCOPE

1.1 Form

This specification covers an aircraft-quality, low-alloy steel in the form of bars, forgings, mechanical tubing, and forging stock.

1.2 Application

These products have been used typically for parts, 3.5 inches (89 mm) and under in nominal thickness at time of heat treatment, requiring a through-hardening steel capable of developing a minimum hardness of 40 HRC when properly hardened and tempered and also for parts of greater thickness requiring proportionately lower hardness, but usage is not limited to such applications.

1.2.1 Certain design and processing procedures may cause these products to become susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking after heat treatment; ARP1110 recommends practices to minimize such conditions.

2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

The issue of the following documents in effect on the date of the purchase order forms a part of this specification to the extent specified herein. The supplier may work to a subsequent revision of a document unless a specific document issue is specified. When the referenced document has been cancelled and no superseding document has been specified, the last published issue of that document shall apply.

3.3.4.5 Decarburization shall be evaluated by one of the two methods of 3.3.4.5.1 or 3.3.4.5.2.

3.3.4.5.1 Metallographic (Microscopic) Method

A cross section taken perpendicular to the surface shall be prepared, etched in accordance with ASTM E1077, and examined metallographically at a magnification not to exceed 200X. The product shall not show a layer of complete (ferrite) or partial decarburization exceeding the limits of Table 3 or 4.

3.3.4.5.2 Hardness Traverse (Microindentation) Method

The total depth of decarburization shall be determined by a traverse method using microindentation hardness testing in accordance with ASTM E1077. Samples shall be hardened, in a protective atmosphere to prevent changes in surface carbon content. Samples may be tempered at the option of the producer. Measurements shall be far enough away from any adjacent surface to be uninfluenced by any decarburization on the adjacent surface. Acceptance shall be as listed in Table 3 or 4.

3.3.4.6 When determining the depth of decarburization, it is permissible to disregard local areas provided the decarburization of such areas does not exceed the above limits by more than 0.005 inch (0.13 mm) and the width is 0.065 inch (1.65 mm) or less.

3.3.4.7 In case of dispute, the total depth of decarburization determined using the microindentation hardness traverse method shall govern.

3.4 Quality

The product, as received by purchaser, shall be uniform in quality and condition, sound, and free from foreign materials and from imperfections detrimental to usage of the product.

3.4.1 Steel shall be aircraft-quality conforming to AMS2301, except specimens containing nonmetallic inclusions over 1 inch (25 mm) in length shall be subject to rejection.

3.4.2 Bars and mechanical tubing shall be free from seams, laps, tears, and cracks after removal of the standard stock removal allowance in accordance with AS1182.

3.4.3 Grain flow of die forgings, except in areas that contain flash-line end grain, shall follow the general contour of the forgings showing no evidence of reentrant grain flow.

3.5 Tolerances

3.5.1 Bars
