1. SCOPE

This appendix establishes the minimum performance, design, fabrication, installation, and test requirements for a mechanical-assist, mobile storage systems in building 1518 at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. The work shall be completed in accordance with this appendix, the Cover PD, and Air Force (AF) Drawing TSH202-01. This appendix covers all equipment, materials, and labor necessary to complete installation of the system.

2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

Applicable documents shall be in accordance with Section 2 of the Cover PD.

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The mechanical-assist, mobile storage system shall be utilized to store pelican cases for weapons storage. Property will be manually picked. The mobile storage system shall interface with the bin shelving as described in Appendix C. The system shall be installed according to AF Drawing TSH202-01 and shall consist of the following components:

a. Carriages, including drive trains

b. Stationary platforms

c. Shelving units

d. Controls

e. Rails

f. Elevated flooring

g. Ramps

h. Safety devices

i. Mechanical fasteners, anchors, and all other items required to install the mobile storage system.

3.2. PERFORMANCE AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

3.2.1. SYSTEM OPERATION

Each carriage as shown on AF Drawings TSH202-01 shall have a crank mechanism on one end, which shall be turned manually clockwise or counterclockwise to move the carriage in the desired direction. No more than five pounds of force on the crank shall be required to move a fully loaded carriage.

3.2.2. CARRIAGES

Carriages shall consist of a frame and drive train, upon which shelving units shall be installed. These carriages shall move as required after the appropriate crank is turned. All carriages shall be capable of supporting a minimum load of 1,000 pounds per carriage foot. No system component shall deflect greater than 0.5 percent of the distance between supports when fully loaded. No component shall exhibit permanent deformation after the maximum load has been removed.

3.2.2.1. FRAME

The frame shall consist of aluminum or steel channel, welded or bolted together to support a fully loaded shelving section.

Cross bracing shall ensure rigidity. Bumpers shall be mounted on the frame, spaced appropriately to minimize carriage contact.

The frame shall be designed for an integral drive train.

3.2.2.2. DRIVE CHAIN

Drive chain shall connect a set of gear reduction sprockets from the crank shaft to the drive shaft.

3.2.2.3. DRIVE SHAFTS

Drive shafts shall be made of steel and have a minimum diameter of 1 inch. Splices or connections to other sections of the drive shaft, drive wheels, and gears shall be slotted for key joints or use shoulder bolts. Drive shafts shall run through pillow block or flanged bearings on either side of the drive wheel. Slave drive shafts shall be driven by use of sprockets and chain from the main drive shaft.

3.2.2.4. BEARINGS

Bearings shall have a static load rating equal to or greater than the maximum bearing loading, including applicable safety factors, under all operating conditions. Bearings shall be

Shaw AFB, SC – App B - Page 3 permanently lubricated, securely mounted, and properly housed for protection from physical damage.

3.2.2.5. WHEELS

Each carriage shall have two wheels per rail. Each carriage shall have at least two drive wheels and at least two guide wheels (drive wheels may also act as guide wheels). All wheels shall be balanced, hardened steel. Wheels which are connected to the drive shaft shall be slotted for key joints. Wheels shall be capable of supporting the fully loaded carriage.

Wheels shall not slide or lose contact with the rail.

3.2.2.6. GUIDANCE SYSTEM

All carriages shall use flanged wheels or guide bearings for guidance over the rails. If flanged wheels are used, each carriage shall have a minimum of two flanged guide wheels. If guide bearings are used, then each carriage shall have a minimum of four sets of guide bearings. Guide bearings shall be precision machined and permanently lubricated.

3.2.3. STATIONARY PLATFORMS

Stationary platforms shall be of the same construction and height as the carriages, but they shall be anchored to the rails or floor and require no drive train.

3.2.4. SHELVING SECTIONS

Bin shelving which conforms to the requirements of Appendix C, shall be bolted to the carriages and stationary platforms as shown on AF Drawing TSH202-01.

3.2.5. FACE PANELS

Fire retardant, decorative, face panels shall be fastened to one end of all the shelving sections as shown on the drawing. Face panels shall provide a rigid mounting location for controls and card holders. The face panels shall be fabricated from steel and cover the entire width and height of the shelving sections.

3.2.6. HANDLES

Each carriage shall have a handle mounted on each face panel as shown on AF Drawing TSH202-01, which will allow the operator to pull it as necessary until the desired aisle is available.

3.2.7. ROW IDENTIFICATION

Card holders shall be installed on the face panels for row identification. Two card holders shall be mounted on each face panel unless the row is accessible from only one side, in that case only one card holder is required. The card holders shall be at least five inches wide by three inches high and mounted at eye level so that operators can locate numbers easily. Row identification cards will be made up by the warehouse personnel according to their established location assignment practices. A blank card will be provided by the Contractor for each card holder.

3.2.8. RAIL INSTALLATION

The carriages shall move over low profile steel rail assemblies.

The rails shall not exceed 1 1/4 inches. After leveling the rails, load bearing grout shall be used to fill in any gaps between the rail assemblies and the existing floor. Rails shall be installed no more than seven feet apart and be equally spaced apart, except for the ends of the carriage. Rails shall be set back far enough from the ends of the carriage to prevent the ramps from extending into the aisle. The distance from the ends of the carriages to the nearest rail shall not exceed 18 inches.

3.2.9. END STOPS

End stops shall be installed to prevent the end carriages from running off the rails. These end stops shall be securely anchored to the rail or the floor.

3.2.10. RAIL SKIRTS

Rail skirts shall be installed to cover the unfinished edges of the floor, rail, and ramp.

3.2.11. ELEVATED FLOORING

Elevated flooring shall be constructed of fire retardant plywood panels, which are able to support a load of 75 pounds per square foot. A non-slip rubber-type “Endura” floor covering or equivalent shall be installed on top of the elevated flooring plywood panels and ramp. All rubber flooring products shall be a .125 inch thickness as a minimum. Flooring shall be sized to fit between the rails, level with the top of the rails, in order to provide a safe walking surface for personnel. Adjacent sheets of subflooring shall be shimmed along the full length of the

Shaw AFB, SC – App B - Page 5 common side. The ends shall have a steel skirt that extends to the floor to hide the ramp and rails.

3.2.12. RAMPS

Fire retardant plywood ramps shall be provided on both sides of the system. These ramps shall not extend past the end of the carriages into the aisles. The grade on these ramps shall not exceed 10 percent. Steel ramps shall also be acceptable.

3.2.13. SAFETY DEVICES

3.2.13.1. ANTI-MOVEMENT LOCK

Each carriage shall be equipped with a mechanism which will lock the carriage in place while the operator is in the aisle.

3.2.13.2. CARRIAGE LOCK DEVICES

Carriage lock devices shall be installed on the carriages of the mobile aisle system. These devices shall be key activated and prevent a carriage from being moved while locked in place. Each carriage lock shall be keyed alike.

4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS

4.1. INSPECTIONS

The system shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the cover purchase description. These inspections shall be completed as part of the systems checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

4.2. TESTS

The following tests shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

1. 3.2.1. A functional test of 24 hours in three eight hour increments shall be made on the system.

It shall be tested randomly over this period.

Test each crank by turning it both clockwise and counterclockwise. If the carriage does not move in the desired direction, the system fails the test.

2. 3.2.2. The deflection test shall be performed randomly on any system component. The Contractor shall load the selected shelves to maximum loading.

The shelves shall remain loaded for four continuous hours. At the end of the four hour period, the system shall be checked for deflection. If any system component deflects more than 0.5 percent of the distance between supports when fully loaded, the system fails the test. If any component exhibits permanent deformation after the maximum load has been removed, the system fails the test.

4.3. CERTIFICATIONS

The Contractor shall provide certification that the following requirements have been met. All certifications shall be provided in accordance with the Contract Data Requirements List.
