Tradition Field – Port St. Lucie, FL
Project Geotechnical Engineer both during design and construction of a new stadium and practice fields. The geotechnical design involved a value engineering recommendation of a spread footing (shallow) foundation for the stadium in lieu of a much more expensive deep foundation system which was originally proposed by the project architect.
Albert Whitted Airport Taxiway A – St. Petersburg, FL
Principal Geotechnical Engineer providing field and laboratory support services to produce a Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) mix design with cement additive for Taxiway A at the Albert Whitted Airport in St. Petersburg, Florida. The field and laboratory testing consisted of cores, field in-place nuclear density tests, laboratory Proctor, and Limerock Bearing Ratio (LBR) tests.
University of Miami Football Practice Field – Miami, FL
Geotechnical Engineer-of-Record, working with FTE Sports, to investigate and resolve poor field drainage. Terracon evaluated and recommended use of existing exfiltration trench (i.e. field drainage discharge galleries) as a significant cost-saving feature of the new drainage system.
Butler Park Multi-Purpose Fields - North Port, FL
APR/QA/QC. At the time of Terracon’s services, the 42-acre Butler Park included one baseball field, two little league fields, and a rectangular multi-purpose field. The project entailed the construction of three new soccer fields. Terracon performed a geotechnical study to provide information and geotechnical engineering recommendations relative to subsurface soil conditions, earthwork, and groundwater conditions.
Berth 12 Container Yard – Port Manatee, FL
Principal Geotechnical Engineer for an engineering evaluation of design options for subgrade support of a new container yard. As part of the Berth 12 extension project, approximately 10 acres of heavy-duty flexible pavement was constructed as a storage yard for ship containers. The project area is reclaimed (filled) land with dredge spoils containing sporadic deposits of soft clay and silt soils. In lieu of the very expensive process of large-scale excavation and replacement of the dredge spoils, a value engineering option of proof-rolling the subgrade was implemented. An off-road dump truck, weighing 90 tons loaded with soil, was used to proof-roll the subgrade and detected localized areas of soft soils requiring removal and replacement. This value engineering approach resulted in substantial cost savings in project earthwork.
Datura Ditch – Sarasota, FL
Principal Geotechnical Engineer to evaluate the cause of slope failures and the suitability of contractor-proposed repairs. A vegetated reinforced wall (VRW) system, designed by others, was constructed at a 1:2 (horizontal: vertical) inclination along 1500 feet of existing drainage ditch as part of a sediment control project for Lemon Bay. During construction, and the wet season of 2013, sections of the wall failed as rotational landslides. Services included post-failure exploratory work using a mini-drill rig with rubber tracks to access limited right-of-way areas and to minimize disturbance to the yards of existing homes.
