Mission Bridge simulator utilizes proprietary simulation software. The simulation computers do not store or process information. The simulation software provides scenario data and simulated sensor output to simulation equipment. The simulation equipment is located in a secure building and within a locked space. No other Coast Guard IT systems are located or accessible from within the simulator space. Prior to technical visits all network port connections are validated. Only authorized personnel are able to access, operate and maintain the simulator. All service technicians are properly vetted by the Command Security Officer (CSO) prior to their visit and fully escorted during the duration of the technical visit.

BACKGROUND. Polaris Ship Bridge Simulator software is a proprietary system developed by KONGSBERG MARITIME SIMULATION INC, which is the application that runs the 4.9-million dollar Coast Guard Maritime Security Cutter (WMSL) Bridge Visual Simulator located at USCG Training Center Petaluma. The Polaris Bridge Simulator software provides the visualization of vessels, targets, navigational aids and geographical exercise areas used during WMSL Bridge simulation training. Polaris software has been customized by Kongsberg software engineers and specially configured to work in concert with a Northrup Grumman custom PC and software packaged called CDU Sim/STIM. It provides simulated sensor data to all the installed WMSL Bridge Console instrumentation installed within the training environment. The CDU Sim/Stim computer was installed during the original installation of the WMSL bridge simulator and is beginning to fail. It is the central point of failure for simulator operations. The continued utilization of the current configuration will require future updates to this system beyond the cost associated to bring it to an updated hardware and software package necessary to provide services to the bridge simulator.

The services involved in this project will remove the Northrup Grumman CDU Sim/STIM system from the configuration of the WMSL simulator while providing a technical refresh which maintains or enhances the current configuration of the WMSL Bridge and existing “true to ship” shipboard components. It will also leverage the relationship between the service provider and their preferred visualization partners to provide much needed projector maintenance and enhanced simulated nighttime operations capabilities.

The Maritime Security Cutter Large (WMSL) Full Mission Bridge (FMB) simulator located at Training Center Petaluma was initially built and designed in 2007 by Kongsberg Maritime Simulation INC. The WMSL Full Mission Bridge simulator was built utilizing customized version of the Kongsberg Polaris Full Mission Bridge software which interfaced with many components installed on the Maritime Security Cutter Large Bridge. This system has been maintained over the years, with upgrades as necessary to retain a high degree of fidelity. The Polaris FMB software is at end of life with only a few years of support remaining before a complete overhaul and move to KSIM software will be required to remain a supported simulator by Kongsberg Maritime Simulation.

Moving to their new flagship software will require the utilization of our true to cutter shipboard devices including helm wheel and throttles to be abandoned and replaced by simulated generic gear. Many configuration options utilizing Kongsberg systems were explored, all leading to the eventual requirement for us utilize a generic bridge training environment in the future.
