SYNOPSIS

Bank Stabilization Project on the Big River at Calico Creek

Project Description: This Bank Stabilization Project is being implemented for the U.S.

Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). The overall goal of the project is to reduce terrestrial lead contamination from entering the aquatic system and further contaminating downstream areas. This will be accomplished by providing stability to banklines and stream channels through the use of bank stabilization, in-stream stone structures, pilot channel creation, and riparian planting.

Work requires:

• the harvest of local timbers using forestry best management practices;

• clearing, grubbing, and stripping of existing vegetation for construction;

• excavation of stream pilot channels through existing gravel bars;

• removal of a remnant stone structure;

• placement of longitudinal peak stone toe protection, weirs, and grade control structures;

• construction of embankments for stabilization using biotechnical stream bank stabilization techniques; and

• placement of native seeds and harvested vegetation.

The work will occur along approximately 4,000 linear feet of the Big River on both sides of the bank, and along approximately 800 linear feet of Calico Creek. Access roads and staging areas will need to be developed in and around the riverine construction area, which can be prone to rapid fluctuations in water levels.
