Statement of Work Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 03/03/2020
1.0 PROJECT TITLE
2011 Freightliner Differential Gear upgrades on (2) Fuel Tanker Trucks and (2) Water Tanker Trucks for MERS Maynard
1.1 Background:
· Currently, FEMA-MERS maintains 2 - 3,000 Gallon fuel tanker trucks and 2 – 3,000 Gallon Water Tanker Trucks. These vehicles are geared at 6.14, limiting the top speed to about 58 MPH at maximum engine RPM of around 2150, which is about 400 RPM above Cummins recommended max RPM, and up against the Governor.
· With the increase in Speed Limits across the nation, (some interstates and state highways have reached 85 mph), the governed maximum speed of 58 mph on these fuel tanker trucks is causing a hazardous over the road environment for the operator. The goal of this re-gearing project is to increase the maximum safe travel speed of these tankers by upgrading the gear ratio thus increasing their highway speed to a maximum of 77 MPH. Modifying these vehicles will allow them to transit both interstates and state highways at or closer to the posted speed limits and not impede the flow of traffic and not exceed the manufacturers recommend RPM.
