About this file
This statement of work outlines requirements for sap flow sensors to measure canopy transpiration in soybean plants. The federal contractor is required to deliver three sets of sensors within 30 days of award that can independently measure sap flux in at least eight soybean stems per set, for a total of 18 sensors. Each sensor set must integrate with Campbell data loggers, have a minimum 20 foot cable, operate from a 12V battery, and non-invasively measure stems from 4-11mm in diameter. The related federal contract opportunity is through the US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service for sap flow sensors solicited under opportunity number 12505B23Q0299 to support research on transpiration and nutrient acquisition in crop plants.

Statement of Work (SOW)
Project: Canopy transpiration measurements in crop plants
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.0 Scope of Work: To measure sap flux through soybean plants to estimate canopy transpiration rate. Our objective is to quantify the role of transpiration in nutrient acquisition and study effects of predicted vapor pressure deficit changes.
2.0 Background: Leaf level photosynthesis can be measured with gas exchange sensors. This is useful for understanding how leaves individually respond to the environment but scaling from leaves to the entire canopy requires many assumptions and thus gives imprecise estimates. Sap flow sensors placed at the base of plants measure the total water flux through a single plant, and by measuring several plants in an area, canopy transpiration can be more precisely estimated.
CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS
3.0 Technical Requirements/Tasks:
• The equipment should be suitable for quantification of sap flux through stems of living soybean plants in an agricultural field.
• The equipment should provide measurements at least every 30 minutes.
• The equipment should work with Campbell data loggers and multiplexors, but the data loggers and multiplexors are not part of the request.
• Three sets of sensors are required in order to measure fluxes at three locations.
Each set must be able to measure at least eight stems independently (that is, the capability to measure a total of 24 stems between all three systems), but we are presently purchasing a total of only 18 sensors.
• The equipment must include software to transform voltages and currents from the sensor into sap flow rates.
• Each set of sensors with loggers must have power requirements that allow it to operate from a 12 V lead acid battery connected to a charger. The batteries and chargers are not part of the request.
• The sensor must not pierce the stem. Soybean stems are small and piercing them will substantially alter sap flux.
• For this request, we are purchasing 18 sensors to measure stems of about 9 mm in diameter, but the system itself must with be compatible with sensors that are able to measure stems with diameters between 4 to 11 mm.
• The cables connecting the sensors to the box must be at least 20 feet long.
4.0 Deliverables / Schedule:
The equipment should be delivered to the address below within 30 calendar days from date of receipt.
