About this file
This statement of work outlines technical requirements for a benchtop centrifuge to be provided to the USDA Agricultural Research Service. The centrifuge must be able to spin plates, tubes, and bottles between -10 and 40 degrees Celsius for sample preparation in sugar beet research. It should have a programmable touchscreen, temperature monitoring, fit on a benchtop under 30 inches wide and 15 inches high, and include adapters for 96-well plates, 15mL and 50mL tubes, and 150mL bottles. Biocontainment lids suitable for cell cultures are also required. The centrifuge and all components must be delivered within 90 days of award to the specified USDA location. This supports the related federal contract opportunity posted by the USDA Agricultural Research Service Midwest Area to procure the benchtop centrifuge.

Statement of Work (SOW) Project: Benchtop Centrifuge
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.0 Scope of Work:
Provide a benchtop centrifuge that is capable of spinning plates, tubes, and bottles for sample preparation and analyses while maintaining a designated temperature between -10 and 40 °C. This machine is needed to develop marker-assisted selection systems in sugar-beet, and perform expression, microbiome, DNA extractions and other experiments.
2.0 Background:
The USDA-ARS Sugar Beet Research Unit (SBRU) is conducting research to examine allelic variability in sugar-beet populations, breeding lines and cultivars for a number of different traits.
Processing of field, greenhouse and lab collected tissues is the first step in completing molecular characterization. Characterizing allelic diversity at the population level and evaluating individuals via marker assisted selection and diagnostic markers is essential to breeding new cultivars with improved traits.
CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS
3.0 Technical Requirements/Tasks:
Provide and deliver one benchtop centrifuge, with the following characteristics/capabilities:
• The machine should be able to switch rotors using push-button installation to allow for one-handed replacement of rotors when possible.
• The machine should include a programmable touch screen and allow for pre-programmed parameters based on study needs.
• Machine should include monitoring of both sample and air temperature inside the unit to ensure accurate sample management.
• Machine should be benchtop compatible with dimensions not exceeding 28” L x 30” W x 15” H
(inches).
• Machine should have a temperature range of at least -10 °C to 40 °C
• Machine must be compatible with US electrical systems.
• Machine should include a swinging bucket rotor adapters for microcentrifuge plates (96 deep well, 96 well standard). Adapters should be capable of holding more than one plate per bucket.
• Machine should include adapters for 15 and 50 mL conical tubes, as well as 150 mL bottles.
• Machine should include biocontainment-style lids, suitable for centrifuging cell cultures, that can be operated with a single hand.
4.0 Deliverables / Schedule:
All items must be delivered within 90 days of award to the USDA-ARS Sugar Beet Research Unit (SBRU) located at Michigan State University, 1066 Bogue Street, A361 Plant and Soil Sciences Building (PSSB), East Lansing, MI 48824, and include required components listed in the technical requirements/tasks section.
