About this file
This statement of work outlines requirements for additive manufacturing of mechanical and thermal test coupons. Mantis Composites will design for printer travel path by May 30th and manufacture various coupon types made of low-melt polyaryl ether ketone reinforced with continuous carbon fiber by September 1st, including 5 each of 0 and 90 degree unidirectional coupons for tension and compression testing, flatwise tension coupons, in-plane shear coupons, and custom compact tension coupons for fracture testing. Additionally, 6 each of 0 and 90 degree unidirectional coupons will be made for thermal conductivity testing. By September 1st, Mantis Composites must also perform finishing steps of cutting, grinding, and notching as needed and transfer print monitoring data. All coupons and offcuts will be delivered to Goddard Space Flight Center by September 8th. The period of performance runs from May to September 2023 with Kenneth Segal as the project lead.

Summary/Background
Thermoplastics Development for Exploration Applications (TDEA) seeks to advance thermoplastic manufacturing technologies, including additive manufacture. To this end, TDEA has identified Mantis Composites as a state-of-the-art industrial partner with capabilities for additive manufacture of complex geometries using low-melt polyaryl ether ketone (LM-PAEK) with continuous carbon fiber (AS4C) reinforcement. TDEA seeks to procure a set of mechanical and thermal test coupons from Mantis Composites, in preparation for future manufacture and testing of more complicated articles.
Requirements
The TDEA team at Goddard Space Flight Center has provided a coupon list along with drawings to Mantis Composites:
5 of: 10” × 0.5” × 0.1” unidirectional coupons for 0° tension 5 of: 7” × 1” × 0.1” unidirectional coupons for 90° tension 5 of: 5.5” × 0.5” × 0.1” unidirectional coupons for 0° compression 5 of: 5.5” × 0.5” × 0.1” unidirectional coupons for 90° compression 5 of: 1.1” diameter × 0.1” unidirectional coupons for flatwise tension 5 of: 9” × 1”, [45/-45]4s coupons for in-plane shear 5 of: custom compact tension coupons for mode I fracture 6 of: 1.1” × 1.1” × 0.5” unidirectional coupons for 0° thermal conductivity 6 of: 2” diameter × 0.1” unidirectional coupons for 90° thermal conductivity

Deliverables
Mantis Composites shall:
(1) Perform preliminary design for printer travel path. – May 30, 2023
(2) Manufacture the coupons as designed. – September 1, 2023
(3) Perform the coupon finishing steps listed below. – September 1, 2023
a. Cut any coupons printed as larger panels or assemblies.
b. Remove the bottom 3 layers and top 1 layer of each part via grinding to eliminate boundary material with different thermal history from the bulk, without damaging fibers at the exposed face.
c. Grind down remaining surfaces to flatness, without damaging fibers at the exposed face.
d. Machine notches in the compact tension coupons.
(4) Transfer in situ print monitoring data to the shared drive created for file exchange between Mantis Composites and Goddard. – September 1, 2023
(5) Deliver the coupons and offcut scraps to Goddard. – September 8, Period of Performance
May 2023 to September 2023.
Travel / ODC Requirements
None.
