Project White Bark Pine Thinning

General Information

1.0 Scope of Work

Provide a brief statement of the overall project, including goals and objectives.

Hand thinning and hand piling of 32 acres in white bark pine. Removal of competing conifers from within 50 feet of existing white bark pine trees, thinning to a 16 x 16 foot variable spacing where there are no white bark pine trees.

2.0 Background

Insects have been active in the area in the past, and removal of competing vegetation is planned to help keep insect activity to a minimum, and reduce excess fuels to help reduce catastrophic fires.

Contractor Requirements

3.0 Technical Requirements / Tasks

Thin 32 acres of white bark pine, using chainsaws. Remove all live conifers that are not white bark pine that measure less than 20 inches diameter and that occur within 50 feet of any white bark pine. No white bark pine will be removed.

Areas void of white bark pine will be thinned to an average 16 foot variable spacing. Leave trees in order of preference: White bark pine, ponderosa pine, fir species, lodgepole pine.

No snags will be cut unless they are a safety hazard.

Hand piling of cut material less than 9 inches in diameter. Debris will be piled and covered for burning at a later date by FS employees. Pile specifications as follows – No higher than 5 feet high, by 6 feet wide, by 12 feet long. No pile over large stumps. Piles should be as far away from the leave trees as possible, and should not be build close to existing snags. Larger diameter pieces should be cut to 4-foot lengths and stacked away from burn piles.

Access to the white bark pine area is limited in time, due to high elevation and weather/snow. Because of this, the time for accomplishing this is proposed through October 31, 2021.
