About this file
This is a Special Packaging Instruction (SPI) document for military preservation and packaging of aircraft pylons. The document specifies packaging requirements for item nomenclature "Pylon, Aircraft" (National Stock Number 1S60-01-260-5411) and provides detailed instructions for serviceable and unserviceable methods using Military Preservation IAW MIL-STD-2073 standards. The packaging is categorized into two levels: Level A for standard domestic shipments and Level B for enhanced protection, with specific dimensions, weights, and material specifications for each level. Level A containers measure 85.5" x 13" x 10.75" with a gross weight of 8,540 cubic feet, while Level B containers are 84" x 11.5" x 10" with a gross weight of 6,453 cubic feet.
The instruction mandates specific packaging materials and components, including ASTM D6880 (MDD) and ASTM D5118 closure specifications, humidity indicators (MS20003), barrier bags (MIL-DTL-117 Type I), cushioning materials (A-A-59136 Class 1, Grade A), tape (ASTM D5330), and void-fill materials. Special attention is given to international phytosanitary compliance for wood packaging materials, requiring all wooden components to be constructed from debarked, heat-treated wood at 56 degrees Celsius (133 degrees Fahrenheit) for 30 minutes with certification from an ALSC-recognized accredited agency per ISPM No. 15. The document restricts distribution to the Department of Defense and U.S. DOD contractors only and references destruction procedures per DOD 5220.22-M and DOD 5200.1-R. Revision F updated the document on 01 February 2018 to include distribution statements and destruction notices with updated dimensions.
