C. THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE DESCRIBES THE APPROVED METHOD FOR PRESERVATION OF THIS

ENGINE:

ANY DEVIATIONS FROM THIS PROCEDURE SHALL BE PRE-APPROVED BY TACOM AND THE

ENGINE MANUFACTURER.

SEE FIGURES 1 – 4 FOR ITEM LOCATIONS ON ENGINE.

1. REPLACE OIL FILTER (P/N PF2232) WITH SLAVE FILTER. SET ORIGINAL FILTER ASIDE TO BE RE-

INSTALLED AFTER PRESERVATION PROCESS IS COMPLETE.

2. FILL PRESERVATIVE PUMP WITH ONE (1) GALLON OF PRESERVATIVE CONFORMING TO MIL-PRF-

21260, TYPE PE-10. ATTACH PRESERVATIVE SUPPLY HOSE TO PRESERVATIVE PUMP OUTLET.

3. INSTALL PRESERVATIVE SUPPLY HOSE FROM PRESERVATIVE PUMP TO FUEL INLET ON ENGINE, SEE FIGURE 1 FOR IDENTIFICATION.

4. REMOVE CAP FROM FUEL RETURN LINE, ATTACH PRESERVATIVE RETURN HOSE, POSITION HOSE

OVER PRESERVATIVE DRAINAGE CONTAINER. SEE FIGURE 1 FOR IDENTIFICATION ON ENGINE.

5. PUMP ONE (1) GALLON OF PRESERVATIVE MIL-PRF-21260, TYPE PE-10, THROUGH FUEL SYSTEM

ALLOWING EXCESS PRESERVATIVE TO DRAIN INTO 5 GALLON PAIL.

DO NOT REUSE PRESERVATIVE.

6. REMOVE PRESERVATIVE SUPPLY LINES AND RE-CAP BOTH THE FUEL INLET AND THE FUEL

RETURN LINE.

7. FILL ENGINE CRANK CASE WITH THIRTEEN (13) QUARTS OF OIL CONFORMING TO MIL-PRF-21260

GR 15W-40 ENGINE OIL THROUGH OIL FILL OPENING, SEE FIGURE 1. RECAP OPENING.

8. INSTALL SLAVE ENGINE STARTER USING TWO (2) M12-1.5X40 HEX HEAD BOLTS, SEE FIGURE 4

FOR VISUAL REFERENCE. TORQUE BOLTS TO 25LB/FT.

9. REMOVE CAP FROM INTAKE AND EXHAUST PORTS OF TURBO CHARGER, FOG EACH PORT WITH

1ml MIL-PRF-21260, TYPE PE-10

10. FOG APPROXIMATELY 2ml MIL-PRF-21260, TYPE PE-10, ON THE INSIDE OF THE BELLHOUSING

COVERING ALL SURFACES INCLUDING THE FLYWHEEL.

11. REMOVE CAP FROM INTAKE MANIFOLD.

12. CONNECT 24V POWER SUPPLY, SWITCH/POWER BUTTON AND JUMPER WIRE TO STARTER AS

SHOWN IN FIGURE 4.

13. SPRAY OR FOG APPROXIMATELY 12-15 ml OF MIL-PRF-21260, TYPE PE-10, INTO INTAKE MANIFOLD PORT WHILE ENGINE IS BEING CYCLED. CYCLE THE ENGINE BY ENGAGING THE STARTER UNTIL 36 - 45 ml OF OIL HAS BEEN FOGGED OR SPRAYED INTO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD, 12 – 15 ml AT A

TIME.

DO NOT CYCLE FOR MORE THAN 5 SECONDS ALLOWING THE STARTER TO REST 30 SECONDS

BETWEEN CYCLES. FAILURE TO COMPLY MAY RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE STARTER.

14. DISCONNECT THE POWER SUPPLY, SWITCH/PUSH BUTTON, JUMPER WIRE AND REMOVE

STARTER FROM THE ENGINE.

16. DRAIN OIL FROM CRANKCASE, REPLACE DRAIN PLUG, TORQUE TO 25LB/FT.

17. REPLACE ALL REMOVED CAPS AND PLUGS.

18. COOLING SYSTEM: IT IS ASSUMED THIS ENGINE, IF NEW, HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY RUN WITH

COOLANT UTILIZING NON-CHROMATE INHIBITORS BY THE MANUFACTURER. THEREFORE, THE

COOLING SYSTEM PRESERVATION IS NOT REQUIRED.

THIS COMPLETES THE STEPS FOR ENGINE PRESERVATION REQUIRED PRIOR TO PACKAGING.

D. SEAL ALL OPENINGS TO ITEMS INTERIOR WITH CAPS/PLUGS OF APPROPRIATE SIZE.

E. BRACKETS SHALL BE FABRICATED FROM COMMERCIAL GRADE PLATE STEEL. BRACKETS SHALL BE PAINTED, PLATED OR PRESERVED USING MIL-PRF-16173, GR 4. SEE FIGURES 1, 2, 6 – 8 FOR

BRACKET DRAWINGS AND PLACEMENT.

F. ALL HARDWARE SHALL BE ZINC PLATED. SEE TABLE 1 AND FIGURES 6 – 8 FOR SIZES, LOCATIONS

AND TORQUE VALUES.

G. BLOCKING IS TO BE SECURED TOGETHER USING NAILS CONFORMING TO ASTM-F1667 (ITEM A ONLY) ATTACH ITEM L & M TO CONTAINER LID USING NAILS CONFORMING TO ASTM-F1667, ITEM N TO SO BE ATTACHED TO ITEM M USING WOOD SCREWS TO SECURE VEHCILE ENGINE BRACKETS IN PLACE.

SEE TABLE 1 AND FIGURES 4, 5 AND 12 FOR SIZES AND ORIENTATION. ALL CORNERS ARE TO BE

BEVELED 45 DEGREES AS NOT TO PUNCTURE ENVELOPE.

H. WRAP ENGINE ENTIRELY IN GREASE PAPER, SECURE WITH TAPE.

I. APPLY CUSHIONING AROUND THE ENGINE TO PREVENT PUNCTURING THE FOIL ENVELOPE

MATERIAL, SECURE WITH TAPE.

J. DESICCANT BAGS, TOTALING 208 UNITS, SHALL BE PLACED WITHIN FOIL ENVELOPE, BENEATH OIL

PAN, BEFORE SEALING BAG.

K. ENVELOPE FABRICATION SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH SPECIFICATION MIL-DTL-6060. MATERIAL USED FOR FABRICATION OF GASKETS SHALL CONFORM TO SPECIFICATION ASTM F 104. GASKETS

SHALL MEASURE 6-1/2 X 27 AND CEMENTED TO EACH SIDE OF THE BAG AT THE MOUNTING

LOCATION USING MMM-A-260 ADHESIVE OR COMMERCIAL EQUIVALENT. AFTER POSITIONING

BARRIER OVER BOLTS, A SUFFICIENT QUANTITY OF ADHESIVE SHALL BE APPLIED AROUND BOLT AND GASKET TO PROVIDE AN AIRTIGHT SEAL. SEE TABLE 1 AND FIGURE 9 FOR LOCATIONS OF

GASKETS AND HOLES IN ENVELOP.

L. PACK ENGINE BRACKET COMPONENTS PER TABLE 2. PLACE ALL HARDWARE IN A BAG

CONFORMING TO MIL-DTL-117, TY III, CL B, ST 2, SIZE: 6 X 8, CLOSE BY HEAT SEAL OR TAPE.

M. WRAP EACH BRACKET SEGMENT IN FOAM, SECURE WITH TAPE.

N. PLACE BRACKET SEGMENTS AND HARDWARE INTO CONTAINER. LABEL CONTAINER WITH “VEHICLE

ENGINE BRACKETS”. CLOSE CONTAINER IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM-D1974, METHOD 2B1.

INSPECT IN ACCORDANCE WITH MIL-STD-2073-1, CRITERIA FOR PRESERVATION, METHOD 10.PLACE

CONTAINER INTO BLOCKING IN LID AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 13.

O. CONTAINER SHALL USE 2 (NOM.) X 12 (NOM.) SLEEPER BOARDS PLACED AGAINST THE OUTSIDE SKIDS OF CONTAINER BASE. CLOSE CONTAINER IN ACCORDANCE WITH CONTAINER SPECIFICATION

ASTM-D7478.

CRANKING, REMOVE ALL CAP/PLUGS AND TAPE AND ADD PROPER OPERATIONAL LUBRICANT

TO CRANKCASE”.
