About this file
This document outlines specifications for a handheld near infrared (NIR) forage and grain analyzer for the USDA Agricultural Research Service Field Research Implementation and Information Delivery Pacific West Area. The specifications require a portable handheld NIR that can analyze forage quality in both field and laboratory settings using customizable calibrations for various crops. It must return quality data within minutes, store data internally or export it via USB or WiFi, and analyze fresh and dried plant materials across a wide range of parameters with little sample preparation. The device should include software for data analysis and calibration development, and come standard with calibrations for basic forage quality metrics. Additional optional parameters, interchangeable batteries, an all-weather design, and a three-year warranty are also specified. The related federal contract opportunity is for procurement of this handheld NIR analyzer by the USDA ARS Forage Seed & Cereals Research Unit in Corvallis, Oregon.

SPECIFICATIONS for Handheld NIR forage and grain analyzer, Brand Name or Equal to Zeltex X-NIR Handheld analyzer
(SKU: X-NIR-F)
1: Handheld NIR should be able to analyze forage quality in both field or laboratory settings. The handheld NIR needs to be portable so that it can be readily transported to any location.
2: Handheld NIR must be able return quality data within minutes and store data internally or be exported to an external data storage device or cloud. Preferred method of data transfer is via USB or wifi.
3) Handheld NIR must be able to support custom feedstock calibrations to accommodate various types of material including fresh forages (grass), hay, silage, grain, and meal from different crops such as ryegrass, clover, wheat, triticale, barley, oats, and other grasses and legumes.
4) Handheld NIR needs to be able to analyze quality across a wide-range of plant material including fresh and dried samples of leaves, stems/stalks, and seed/grain and be able to change between calibrations easily based on the feedstock being analyzed.
5) Handheld NIR needs to analyze samples with little preparation and not require additional equipment or consumables to perform analysis.
6) Handheld NIR needs to be equipment with software to track, compile, and analyze NIR data and support exporting data to excel or other formats.
7) Handheld NIR should come with software to build calibrations for new feedstocks or to update existing calibrations with new samples. Adjustable system to add additional feedstock calibrations or traits (measured parameters) to existing calibrations.
8) Handheld NIR should come standard with basic forage quality parameters, including: crude protein, NDF, ADF, ash, crude fat, starch, and Moisture. Additional parameters available for purchase should include: soluble carbohydrates, sugars, N, P, K, S, RFV, and RFQ.
9) Handheld NIR should come standard with a user interface to allow access to all functions and moved easily from one setting to the next.
10) Handheld NIR needs to use interchangeable batteries to allow for continued uninterrupted use while depleted batteries are charging.
11) Handheld NIR needs to be made of all-weather construction for use in different conditions year round.
12) Handheld NIR should come with an available 3-year plus warranty
