SPECIFICATIONS

3D Laser Displacement Profilometer (LDP)

I. BACKGROUND

A 3D laser displacement profilometer (LDP) is required to make precise measurements of fiber-based scaffold thickness, which is a quality attribute of manufactured scaffolds for therapeutic applications.

II. SPECIFICATIONS

[1] The System shall include a computer, monitor, mouse, keyboard, and software to run the LDP;

[2] Shall have 2 laser scanheads for assessing the top and bottom of sample;

[3] The LDP shall be able to acquire data rapidly (250K samples per second);

[4] Laser spot size shall be 35 µm diameter or better;

[5] Laser measuring range in the Z-axis must be 2 mm or better;

[6] LDP must have mechanism to align top and bottom scan heads so that they are imaging the same X-Y positions on the sample (one from top and one from bottom);

[7] LDP shall have Z-axis repeatability = 0.1 µm;

[8] The LDP must have a motorized stage that can translate in the X and Y directions to coordinate precise data acquisition from specimens of size 40 mm width (y) by 100 mm (x) length by 0.1 mm thickness (z);

a. Shall have X & Y-axis repeatability = 0.5 µm.

b. Shall have scan range of 100 mm or better in both X- and Y-directions.

[9] Controller must have function where it rapidly alternates the scanning function from the top head to the bottom to avoid interference between the 2 heads for samples that may not be 100% opaque to the laser light;

[10] The LDP software must be able to export data to a non-proprietary file format (for example: .txt, .csv or .xlsx files).

[11] LDP system must come with mounting system on a stand to stabilize the X-Y translation stage for holding specimens and the mounts for the top and bottom lasers;

[12] Stage must have precision Z-position adjustment capability so that specimens can be precisely placed within the middle of the laser measurement range where measurements are most accurate;

[13] LDP system of lasers and stages must be able to capture a data point for every 0.05 mm by 0.05 mm square on both the top and bottom of a specimen. For a specimen that is 40 mm wide by 100 mm long, this would yield 3.2 million data points as follows: [(40 mm divided by 0.05 mm) X (100 mm divided by 0.05 mm) X 2 sides (top and bottom) = 3,200,000];

[14] LDP shall use a standard USA NEMA 5-15 (15A/125V) electric receptacle;

[15] Must have intuitive, software driven interface, that runs on a Win 10 computer, can create plots of specimen thickness and can generate 3D renderings of the specimens;

[16] The computer that runs the LDP must be compatible with NIST network (TPM 2.0 compatible).

III. DELIVERY

Delivery of the LDP system shall be F.O.B Destination and shall occur within 90 days of award. However, due to current restrictions, delivery shall not take place until the contractor coordinates with the designated TPOC and Contracting Officer (CO). Prior to shipment, the contractor must ensure NISTs campus is open and accepting deliveries, If the restrictions of access to campus impacts delivery schedules, a modification may be executed by the CO to establish an extended delivery timeframe.

IV. INSTALLATION

The Contractor shall install the LDP system at NIST Gaithersburg, Maryland. Installation shall include, at minimum, uncrating/unpacking of all equipment, set-up and hook-up of all equipment, start-up, demonstration of specifications, and removal of all trash. Installation must result in a fully functional device with coordinated stage translation and data acquisition. This can be achieved two ways. First, a turnkey system can be shipped to NIST bldg. 224 in Gaithersburg MD in a manner that the NIST TPOC can unpack and test the device with telephonic assistance from the vendor. Second, for a non-turnkey system, a contractor may come to NIST to set up and test the system.

V. TRAINING

The Contractor shall conduct a one-day training session on use of the LDP system for at least two NIST personnel. At minimum, training shall provide the basic use of the system, and a thorough demonstration of the instrument/solution functions, maintenance, data administration, and basic troubleshooting. Training may be conducted in person or over video conference/teleconference.

VI. TESTING AND ACCEPTANCE

Acceptance shall occur when the LDP is installed, staff have been trained and the LDP is tested using our electrospun fiber constructs, including operation of lasers, translation stages and computer.

VII. WARRANTY

The contractor shall provide, at minimum, a one-year warranty which includes all parts, labor and travel.
