About this file

This document is a requirements document for a Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS) system. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Chemical Sciences Division seeks to couple an existing Mettler Toledo TGA2 thermogravimetric analyzer with a GC/MS to enhance measurement capabilities for analyzing carbon in cement materials and other standard reference samples. The GC/MS must be compatible with the TGA2 and triggerable via the instrument's control software. Key requirements for the GC/MS include an analytical module with two gas chromatography columns to separate permanent gases, solvents, and small organic molecules, with sample pressures from atmospheric to 15 psi and column temperatures from ambient to 180 degrees Celsius. The system must be new and meet all specifications outlined to improve the measurement of volatile species evolved during thermogravimetric analysis.

REQUIREMENTS DOCUMENT

Gas Chromatograph with Mass Spectrometer

I. Background The Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Material Measurement Laboratory (MML), serves as the Nation's reference laboratory for chemical measurements and standards to enhance U.S. industry's productivity and competitiveness, assure equity in trade, and provide quality assurance for chemical measurements used for assessing and improving public health, safety, and the environment. The Inorganic Chemical Metrology (ICM) Group within CSD is responsible for chemical measurements of a wide range of materials, many of which are part of the Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) program. Currently, the ICM Group is developing analytical methods and candidate reference materials for carbon species in cements, concretes, and similar matrices as part of the initiative for direct air capture and sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Among the many techniques that the ICM Group is using for the analysis of carbon is a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). To enhance measurement capabilities of the TGA, NIST is looking to couple the existing instrument (a Mettler Toledo TGA2) with a Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS) by utilizing an outlet from the TGA that allows coupling to a MS or a GC/MS. The GC and the MS shall be connected sequentially. A new GC/MS that can be coupled to the existing TGA would significantly improve the ability to measure carbon in cement materials as well as enhance analytical measurements for many other SRM projects. The aim of the GC/MS is to separate and identify the volatile species that may be simultaneously evolved from test samples run on the TGA.

II. Scope Although there are a number of types of Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS) instruments available in the marketplace, the current need is for a GC/MS system that is compatible with the Mettler Toledo TGA2 that can be triggered by the Mettler STAR software version 17.00 to begin the GS/MS data acquisition. The primary targets of analysis from the TGA will be primarily gases (O2, CO, CO2, H2O, etc.), solvents (methanol, ethanol, acetone, etc.) and small organic molecules that are easily volatilized.
