About this file

This document is a NASA Shared Services Center Recommendation and Determination to Solicit from One Source or Brand Name form, specifically a Brand Name Justification for procuring a Dentsply Sirona Schick 33 Size 2 Sensor Start Kit with USB 3.0 6ft cable. The Science Integration Office is seeking this dental sensor kit as part of a technological demonstration for medical imaging capabilities in space exploration missions, with planned flight opportunities on a SpaceX Mission in FY26 and an ISS Mission in FY27-FY28.

The justification emphasizes the critical importance of the Schick33 Dental Sensor in supporting the X-Ray System (XRS) within the Crew Health and Performance architecture. The procurement aims to enhance diagnostic imaging capabilities for future lunar and Martian missions, with a focus on maintaining crew health, safety, and mission success. The document argues that deviating from this specific brand would be detrimental to the mission and potentially incur unnecessary research costs for alternative brands that meet their requirements.

Brand Name Justification:

☒I recommend that NASA, NASA Shared Services Center negotiate only with vendors who can provide the subject band name from Dentsply Sirona Inc.for the purchase of Dentsply Sirona Schick 33 Size 2 Sensor Start Kit; USB 3.0 6ft.. The total estimated cost of this effort is and the estimated period of performance or lead-time for delivery is 30 days ARO.

This recommendation is for the acquisition of supplies or services determined to be reasonably available from only one source/only one manufacture. Competition is impractical for the following reasons (please answer the questions below):

1. What are the reasons for soliciting only the suggested source/suggested brand name? Please provide the unique characteristics of the items or services along with the supporting rationale and the market research performed to substantiate your reason for the suggested source/brand name.

The Science Integration Office has prioritized the X-Ray System (XRS, a component of the Medical System (MS), which is part of the Crew Health and Performance (CHP) architecture as a critical diagnostic tool for situations requiring radiographic imaging. The proposed XRS should be capable of imaging multiple anatomical regions, be transportable between environments, and comply with launch constraints. As human spaceflight advances from low Earth orbit to lunar and Martian missions, space-based diagnostic capabilities will be essential to developing resilient systems that reduce crew risk, enhance performance, and ensure overall mission success. As part of this technological demonstration, dental sensors have been identified as a valuable diagnostic component. The SCHICK33 S2 SNSR START KT 3.0 USB IN 6FT falls within SIO’s budget and supports these objectives. The combined goals of the SCHICK33 Dental Sensor and XRS are to provide the medical imaging capabilities necessary for exploration missions, enabling mission success while maintaining crew health, well-being, and safety.

2. What is the impact to the government if another vendor/brand is used? Include any dollar, schedule, or compatibility impacts if possible.

Patterson Dental Supplies Inc is a privately held company with warehouse facilities located near GRC.

The Schick33 Dental Sensor Kit provides high-quality diagnostic imaging suitable for a range of dental procedures and pathologies. This package includes all necessary components to begin capturing diagnostic images immediately. The primary objective of this procurement is to enhance medical imaging capabilities critical to radiographic systems that support exploration missions. These systems directly contribute to mission success by maintaining crew health, well-being, and safety. It should be noted that SIO is still in the process of down-selecting final hardware; therefore, the previously stated objectives remain applicable. Currently, two potential flight opportunities are planned for inclusion of the dental sensors: a SpaceX Mission in FY26 and an ISS Mission in FY27–FY28. If we were to deviate

Page 2 V2.0 3-15-2017 from this brand it would be detrimental to the mission and potentially cost the government an unnecessary amount of money toward research for alternative brands that would meet our requirements.
