About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA's requirement for Computer Tomography (CT) scanning of 200 Li-ion cell assemblies for the Starliner program. The contractor must receive, CT scan, and store 200 cell assemblies delivered in 3 boxes, with strict handling requirements including room temperature and humidity control (<50% RH). Each cell assembly will be scanned using helical manipulation for 2 minutes at a 16 µm resolution or better, with the serial number tracked.
The analysis portal must enable measurements and identification of outliers across six specific cell metrics: can wall thickness, can eccentricity, jellyroll buckling, negative electrode overhang, housing damage, and metallic contamination. NASA/Boeing will cover all shipping costs, and the contractor (Glimpse) will collaborate with NASA to manually and potentially automatically identify issues like weld splatters. The primary objective is to assess cell quality for the Starliner spacecraft through detailed CT scanning and comprehensive analysis.

Computer Tomography Scans of Li-ion Cell Assemblies
Statement of Work
12 May 2025
1.0 Scope - NASA seeks to scan 200 cell assemblies to access cell quality for Starliner.
2.0 NASA Inputs – NASA will ship 200 cell assemblies.
3.0 Contractor Tasks
3.1 Cell Assembly Receiving – These cell assemblies are classified as Class III: Non-Flight
Hardware. Storage and handling shall be in room temperature and humidity controlled facility (<50% RH).
3.2 CT Scanning – The serial number of each cell assembly scanned and extracted from its bar code label prior to each CT scan and used to track CT volumes. Each CT volume shall be achieved using helical manipulation and take no more than 2 minutes with a resolution of 16 µm or better.
3.3 Cell Assembly Storage – After CT scanning, each cell assembly shall be returned to its original packaging while in room temperature and humidity controlled (<50% RH) facility.
3.4 Return Shipment – NASA/Boeing will be responsible for paying for all incoming and return shipments.
3.5 Analysis Portal – The analysis software on the portal shall enable measurements and compilation and identification of outlier for the following cell metrics;
3.5.1 Can wall thickness – This includes identification of areas with dents.
3.5.2 Can eccentricity – This includes identification of outliers with high diameter eccentricity.
3.5.3 Jellyroll buckling and core circularity – Identify outliers with buckling of the core of the jellyroll
3.5.4 Insufficient negative electrode overhang – Identify outliers with insufficient negative electrode overhang relative to the adjacent cathodes.
3.5.5 Housing damage – Identify outliers with unsymmetrical seating of the crimped header and/or with evidence of damage.
3.5.6 Metallic contamination – Identify outliers with metallic contamination (foreign or native) in the electrodes. NASA will provide examples of cells contaminated by weld splatters, and both NASA and Glimpse will collaborate on identifying weld splatters, first manually on cells scanned by Glimpse, and, if technically feasible, via automated computer vision.
4.0 Basic Program – The contractor shall perform all of section 3.0 on the first 200 cells delivered to the contractor as 3 boxes with up to 72 cell assemblies each.
