About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) outlines NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's requirements for special testing of the LRT-2 HgCdTe APD Gated Camera for potential use in 3-D imaging lidar on the Lunar Exploration and Science Orbiter (LExSO). The testing will be performed by Leonardo DRS in Dallas, TX, using their existing test setup with permission from the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL).
The scope includes selecting and testing an LRT-2 gated camera focal plane array meeting specific performance requirements (32x32 pixel array, >90% quantum efficiency, >1500 average avalanche gain, etc.), conducting function and performance tests with a 1550 nm laser diode, and measuring false event rates under various conditions. Deliverables include test data and CAD models of the camera's mechanical outline and internal optical design. The period of performance is 16 weeks, with work to be performed at Leonardo DRS facilities in Dallas. While no NASA GFE is provided, AFRL will furnish some equipment. The testing aims to determine if raising detection thresholds can reduce noise while maintaining functionality for LExSO applications.

STATEMENT OF WORK (SOW)
Special Tests of the LRT-2 HgCdTe APD Gated Camera
PR: _____________________
Background NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is seeking new lidar detector technologies suitable to use in a 3-D imaging lidar at the near infrared laser wavelength on the Lunar Exploration and Science Orbiter (LExSO) for landing site characterizations. One of the technologies to be evaluated is the second-generation Laser Radar Technology (LRT-2) gated camera by the Leonardo DRS in Dallas, TX, currently being funded by the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL). The LRT-2 gated camera uses a new mercury-cadmium-tellurite (HgCdTe) avalanche photodiode (APD) array which has the highest performance among all lidar detectors in infrared wavelengths. The latest LRT-2 test results has shown feasibility for use in LExSO. However, the current test results were taken at low detection threshold under high noise condition per AFRL requirements, which is impractical to implement in LExSO. We need to find out if we can raise the detection threshold to reduce the noise at the cost of a slightly higher laser power. We have received permission from AFRL for Leonardo DRS to perform additional tests of the LRT-2 per NASA requirements with the existing test setup at Leonardo DRS.
Scope
1. Select an LRT-2 gated camera focal plane array (FPA) to meet the following performance requirement:
• 32x32 pixel, 64x64 micron pixel size, and 64 micron pixel pitch;
• Quantum efficiency: >90% from 1.0 to 2.1 micron wavelength;
• Average avalanche gain: >1500;
• Single photon detection probability: 50% at <50,000/s false event rate;
• Read out integrated circuit (ROIC): one unit cell per pixel with pulse amplitude and time of flight outputs at >2.5 MHz frame rate;
• Noise equivalent photons: <1 photon per pixel per frame;
• Operability (percent of pixels meet requirements): >99%
2. Perform function and performance tests of the above LRT-2 FPA with a 1550 nm laser diode to determine probability of target detection and timing error vs. input signal level at 1 to 10 photon/pulse detection thresholds.
3. Measure false event rate vs. detection threshold with the FPA in dark and at several (>3) different continuous-wave (cw) background illumination levels.
4. An in-person project kick-off meeting at Leonardo DRS with NASA scientists and engineers.
Deliverables or Delivery Schedule
1. Test data from the above tests.
2. A computer-added-design (CAD) model of the mechanical outline (“shrink-wrap”) of the LRT-2 gated camera and a block diagram of the internal optical design with the sizes and spacings of the optical components.
