About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the procurement of two high resolution CX-25 CMOS cameras, accessories, and related image processing software (DAVIS) from LaVision Inc. The cameras will be utilized in Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) experiments at the Aero-acoustic Propulsion Lab (AAPL) at NASA GRC to study turbulent processes in high-speed, high-temperature jets. The initial equipment checkout is scheduled for 10/15/2024, with the first phase of testing occurring between 11/01/2024 and 09/30/2025. Future testing dates for FY 26 and 27 will be determined based on the initial results. The related federal contract opportunity is a sole source acquisition from LaVision, Inc. under FAR 13.106-1(b)(1)(i) for the procurement of the digital cameras, processing software, timing unit, and other accessories for the PIV experiments. NASA/NSSC is the procuring agency, and performance will be located at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC).

STATEMENT OF WORK

The intended purchase is for two high resolution CX-25 CMOS cameras, accessories, and related image processing software (DAVIS) from LaVision Inc. The cameras will be utilized in Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) experiments that will be conducted in the Aero-acoustic Propulsion Lab (AAPL) at NASA GRC. PIV is a laser-based, non-intrusive, whole-field measurement technique that allows measurement of instantaneous velocities in a flow cross section. Depending on camera and laser sheet orientation, two or three dimensional velocity fields can be obtained. The flow is seeded with sub-micron scale tracer particles that faithfully follow the flow. A double-pulsed laser beam is formed into a thin sheet using various optical components; the laser sheet illuminates the seed particles in the flow region of interest. Two successive images of the flow (image pair) with a known time separation are acquired using the cameras in a double-frame mode. The movement of the seed particles between the image pairs is used to calculate flow speed and direction. In a typical acquisition 400-1000 image pairs are recorded. The image pairs are then processed using multi-pass cross-correlation algorithms in the Davis software. The software is required to operate the cameras, lasers, as well as configure correct timing between the equipment. The cameras and the processing software can handle large volumes of data; one acquisition yields close to 40 Gigabytes of data, with a 500-1TB of data generated on a typical run day.

will be used to study turbulent processes in high-speed, high-temperature jets exhausting from various internally mixed nozzles. Detailed velocity measurements in two and three dimension will be carried out using the planar and stereoscopic PIV setup. The results will be crucial for advanced understanding of jet plumes produced by novel nozzle designs that are relevant for commercial supersonic transport vehicles. The plume characteristics have implications on thrust performance and noise radiation signature of such nozzles.
