About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for modifying the SmartPump Gen III 1.0 for use in NASA's ODME Parabolic Flight Printer. The contractor shall evaluate the existing SmartPump Gen III, design and implement modifications to address issues with the valve sticking, fabricate and test 3 modified units, prepare the equipment for parabolic flight testing, and support the parabolic flight campaign. The SOW outlines 5 key milestones, including reporting on the evaluation, modifications, testing, and parabolic flight results.

The related federal contract opportunity is a sole source procurement by NASA/NSSC for the modified SmartPump Gen III direct ink write toolheads. NASA has determined that Sciperio is the sole provider of these components for the ODME Parabolic Flight Printer. The contract will be awarded under FAR Part 12 and FAR Part 13 procedures. Interested parties may submit their capabilities by April 19, 2024, but the government will make the sole source determination at its discretion.

Statement of Work for Modify SmartPump Gen III

1.0 SCOPE

1.1 GENERAL

Based on the parabolic flight feedback, the SmartPump Gen III needs to be evaluated and then modified to allow for continuous printing and operation. The 16mm form factor has reduced all mechanical designs and components and including newly designed components. The larger form factor motors have been replaced with a voice coil technology and this moves the valve which controls the start and stop of the material. The SmartPump Gen III works properly for a period of time and then the valve sticks. If a solvent is put on/in the valve assembly, the valve moves freely again.

1.2 SPECIFIC WORK TO BE PERFORMED

The contractor shall evaluate the SmartPump Gen III extensively to determine the reason for the sticking of the valve. A rework in the design will be done and the SmartPump Gen III will be modified and tested with material flowing through it to determine if the rework was successful. If the rework meets the specifications for proper operation, a total of 3 SmartPump Gen III’s will be modified with the new design.

Additional preparation for a parabolic flight will be done and including adding the newly adjusted SmartPump Gen III. The equipment will be shipped to location for parabolic flight testing and two nScrypt personnel will accompany and operate on flight.

The following tasks will be done:

1) Examine and evaluate the SmartPump Gen III parabolic flight results and determine any issues,

2) Design and rework the SmartPump Gen III to overcome issues,

3) Fabricate and test modified SmartPump Gen III,

4) Prepare for parabolic flight and

5) Support parabolic flight.

There are 5 milestones for this SOW:

Milestone 1: Report on SmartPump Gen III Milestone 2: Report on design modifications for SmartPump Gen III Milestone 3: Report on test of SmartPump Gen III and demonstration of ground functionality with modified SmartPump Gen III tools Milestone 4: Ship nScrypt equipment for parabolic flight and support parabolic flight campaign Milestone 5: Report on parabolic flight
