About this file

The document provided is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) system. The SOW outlines the requirements for the TGA system, including operating pressure, temperature, dewpoint, and atmospheric conditions. The TGA system is intended to be used to evaluate sorbent materials for CO2 adsorption for deep space missions.

The related federal contract opportunity is a sole-source procurement for the TGA system, with METTLER-TOLEDO, LLC as the sole provider. The procurement will be conducted under FAR Part 12 and FAR Part 13 procedures, and the performance location is at the NASA Ames Research Center. The agency is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center, and the NAICS code is 334516. Interested organizations may submit their capabilities and qualifications to the identified point of contact by 4/4/2024, but the government reserves the right to determine whether to proceed with a competitive procurement.

Statement of Work

(TGA)

1. BACKGROUND

Deep space missions are not plausible without a new, reliable CO2 removal air revitalization system. The zeolite adsorption system on ISS, CDRA, requires frequent, costly replacements and therefore would be impractical for long-duration. New potential sorbents must be fully characterized to better understand their long term performance.

Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) is a valuable tool in understanding any potential new sorbent materials

2. OBJECTIVE or REQUIREMENTS

The TGA will be used to evaluate any future sorbent materials for CO2 adsorption. TGA works by placing a sample of material on a sensitive mass balance and ramping up temperature. The changing mass allows you to observe when species desorb, chemisorb, or react, amongst other physical and chemical phenomena. This information will be quite useful in fully evaluating a new sorbent material. High temperatures and quick temperature changes are required to obtain this information and keep throughput of samples up.

3. CHARACTERISTICS, SCOPE or SPECS

TGA must operate in the pressure range 0-14.7 psia

TGA must operate with multiple sweep gases

TGA must operate in the temperature range RT-1100 ºC

TGA must operate in the dewpoint range of 1-200 ºC/min

TGA must withstand both air and pure CO2 or H2O atmospheres

TGA must have a rapid cool down time to allow next sample to start

TGA must be able to be troubleshooted with or repaired by the manufacturer in case of error in calibration or unexpected malfunction

4. Place of Performance

NASA Ames Research Center, Bioengineering Branch, Bldg 239, room 180.

5. Period of Performance

October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024
