About this file

This document contains the Salient Characteristics for a Two-Dimensional (2D) X-Ray Detector required for a federal contract opportunity.

The salient characteristics specify that the 2D X-ray detector must be capable of gathering diffraction data using various techniques, including powder diffraction, thin film diffraction, residual stress measurement, X-ray reflectivity, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, reciprocal space mapping, and crystallite size analysis. It must have a large active area (>2900 mm^2) with a 1030 x 514 pixel array, be radiation hard, have low background count rates, and be configurable for different detection modes and X-ray sources. The system purchase must include on-site installation, integration with the government's existing X-ray equipment, and a one-year warranty. The control system and data analysis software must include real-time graphical representation, system controller, and the latest versions of Bruker's Diffrac software with three licenses for each.

Commercial Availability Certification:

I have evaluated the commercial marketplace and determined that all salient characteristics documented below are available in products/services offered in the commercial marketplace.

Signature (typed name): Thomas Parker Technical Point of Contact (TPOC)

The two-dimensional (2D) X-ray detector shall have the capability to gather diffraction data using various techniques/samples, including: powders diffraction, thin film diffraction, residual stress measurement (uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial), x-ray reflectivity, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, reciprocal space mapping, and crystallite size. The system shall automatically recognize components added to the system in real time. System shall be equipped with a minimum of the following items/capabilities:

1. X-ray Optics/Beam Shaping

a. Foil filters sets for the K beta peaks of Chromium and Copper

b. Copper foil for beam attenuation

c. Solar slit with a two-point-five-degree (2.5°) acceptance angle which can be installed by a user without the need for additional alignments/adjustments or tools.

2. X-ray Detector: 2D detector must be free of defective pixels, channels, etc.

a. 2D x-ray detector

i. A large active area (>2900 millimeter squared or greater) two-dimension photon counting detector.

ii. Detector shall have at least a 1030 X 514 “pixel” array with each pixel having dimensions of 75 micrometers by 75 micrometers.

iii. Detector shall be radiation hard capability exposure to the primary x-ray beam without sustaining damage.

iv. Detector shall be capable of being switched between a 0D, 1D, and 2D mode via software selection.

v. The detector shall have a mean background count rate of less than point zero two (0.02) counts per hour per pixel.

vi. Detector position is automatically detected by software and appropriate calibration files are automatically loaded.

vii. Detector pixels shall have a point spread function of one (1).

viii. Detector shall be equipped to be oriented in a gamma optimized mode and alternatively in a two (2) theta optimize mode.

ix. Detector shall be configured to detect Copper radiation and Chromium radiation.

x. Detector shall be set up/equipped to acquire rapid reciprocal space maps.

3. System purchase shall include:

a. On-site installation by company personnel at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD 21005

b. All additional components that are required to functionally integrate the detector into the existing US Army owned Bruker D8 Discover (located at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD 21005) shall be supplied and installed.

c. A full one (1) year warranty on the system starting from the date that the system is both installed and demonstrated to be fully functional.

4. Control system and data analysis shall include:

a. Realtime graphical representation of instrument configuration.

b. System controller

c. All software (Diffrac.Suite, Diffrac.EVA and Diffrac.Topas) shall be upgraded to the most current versions with three (3) licenses provided for each software.
