About this file
This is a Statement of Objectives for the procurement of a 600 MHz NMR spectrometer system to be delivered, installed, and commissioned at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) by March 2026.
The required system comprises a 600 MHz standard-bore superconducting magnet with low-loss cryostat, electromagnetic disturbance suppression, and guaranteed drift rate less than 10 ppb/hr, paired with an NMR console featuring at least 4 RF transmit/receive channels spanning 5-1200 MHz and 12.5 nanosecond timing resolution. Four specialized probes are required: a 5 mm quad-resonance cryogenic probe optimized for 1H observation with multi-nucleus decoupling capability and variable temperature range of -40°C to +150°C; a 3.2 mm CP-MAS cryogenic probe with maximum rotation frequency of 20 kHz and temperature range -20°C to +60°C; a 3.2 mm non-cryogenic CP-MAS probe with maximum rotation frequency of 24 kHz and extended temperature range of -80°C to +200°C compatible with automated sample changing; and a 5 mm cryogenic broadband probe optimized for 19F and 31P observation with 1H decoupling. Additional deliverables include a cryogenic support platform, automated MAS pneumatic hardware for 3.2 mm probes, and acquisition/processing software with automation capability plus a Linux workstation. Delivery milestones require console/magnet delivery within 6 months of order, quad-resonance probe within 10 months, CP-MAS probe within 12 months, and MAS cryogenic probe within 18 months. Vendors must provide evidence of at least three comparable 600 MHz systems delivered within the past 5 years that include both a 5 mm quad-resonance helium cryogenic probe and a 3.2 mm CP-MAS helium cryogenic probe in production use.

• Magnet: 600 MHz standard-bore superconducting magnet with low-loss cryostat, electromagnetic disturbance suppression, guaranteed drift rate < 10 ppb/hr, high-order shim system with at least 14 gradients, and helium/nitrogen level monitoring.
• Console: NMR console with at least 4 RF transmit/receive channels spanning 5-1200 MHz, 80 MHz system clock, 12.5 ns timing resolution, gradient amplifier control, and 2H lock capability.
• Probe 1 (quad-resonance cryogenic): 5 mm He cryogenic solution probe optimized for 1H observation with 19F/13C/15N decoupling, 2H lock, Z-gradient >= 5 G/A*cm, automated tuning and matching, VT range -40 C to +150 C using N2 gas.
• Probe 2 (solid-state cryogenic): 3.2 mm CP-MAS double resonance He cryogenic probe with automatic tuning/matching and automatic magic angle adjustment, 1H decoupling, X channel supporting at least 13C (13C-17O +15N range acceptable), max rotation frequency >= 20 kHz, and VT range at least -20 C to +60 C.
• Probe 3 (solid-state, non-cryogenic): 3.2 mm CP-MAS solid-state probe with automatic tuning/matching and automatic magic angle adjustment, X channel supporting at least 15N to 31P, max rotation frequency >= 24 kHz, and temperature range at least -80 C to +200 C; compatible with automated solid-state sample changing (autosampling) using
3.2 mm MAS shuttles.
• Probe 4 (double resonance, cryogenic): 5 mm He cryogenic solution probe optimized for X broadband observation (19F, 31P-15N) with broadband 1H decoupling, 2H lock, Z-gradient >= 5 G/A*cm, automated tuning and matching, VT range -40 C to +150 C using N2 gas.
• Cryo support: Cryogenic support platform compatible with the He cryogenic probes, including sample protection accessory.
• MAS hardware: automated MAS pneumatic unit for 3.2 mm probes with speed regulation <= 0.1%, plus lift/accessories and rotor test station compatible with the 3.2 mm cryogenic probe; provide required rotors and packing tools.
• Software/workstation: acquisition and processing software supporting multidimensional NMR with automation capability, and a Linux workstation meeting or exceeding the vendor's current recommended configuration.
