1. Introduction

The specification describes the requirements for a Slow Extraction (SX) crystal collimation (SXCC) station in the Fermilab Delivery Ring (DR) intended to reduce the beam losses produced in the Electrostatic Septum (ESS) foil plane. In the SX, part of the beam is deliberately made unstable using excitation of the 3rd integer resonance in the DR

[1]. The motion of the unstable beam particles is carefully controlled and when they reach their maximum amplitude, they enter the field region of the electrostatic septum and get deflected into the M4 beamline. A small part of the beam is passing directly through a thin foil plane. Due to the scattering in the foil plane this part is lost downstream, in the beam line and in the ring aperture. The beam losses lead to significant radiological and hardware radiation exposure issues and need to be mitigated. One of the ways to mitigate the losses is using Crystal Collimation. The Crystal Collimation station is set up upstream of the ESS1 as show in the Figure 1 below.

Figure 1. The conceptual layout of the Crystal Collimation placement in the Fermilab

Delivery Ring.

The Crystal Collimation station is the beam line vacuum insert consisting of a vacuum can, crystal holder, curved crystal, and the precision motion device(s). The motion device(s) shall allow fine adjustment of the position and orientation of the crystal with respect to the proton beam to the specifications outlined in Table 2.

Figure 2: A typical assembly of a curved crystal with its iron support structure.

A typical geometry of the bent crystal with its encasing is shown in Figure 2 above.

Exact details of the crystal holder design (such as the support bracket positioning) and vertical alignment may be subject to adjustments, involving the crystal producer.

The motion to the goniometer can be provided from the stepper motors and actuators outside the vacuum chamber. If motion is provided by external means, it shall do so via standard CF Flange and meet vacuum requirements listed in Table 1.

2. Scope

This Statement of Work (SOW) provides detailed requirements for the fabrication vendor (hereafter referred to as “the Vendor”) as part of a Request for Quotation (RFQ) from the vendor. All specifications provided in this SOW refer to a single Prototype

Assembly unit. Additional units may be purchased upon mutual written agreement between

FNAL and the Vendor.

In this specification the following key words (in bold text) will be used:

shall: Indicates a mandatory requirement. Designers shall implement such mandatory requirements to claim conformance with this specification.

should: Indicates flexibility with a strongly preferred implementation.

Note: When not in bold text, the words in the table above are being used in the traditional sense; that is, they do not adhere to the strict meanings described above.

3. Vacuum Chamber Fitment

It’s allowable for the installed vacuum chamber to have larger dimensions than the beam pipe it’s coupled to. If the vacuum chamber has a larger diameter than the surrounding beam pipe (6” OD) it shall reduce the diameter where FNAL quick connect

(QC) flanges (F00023279-M) can be installed on either applicable end to make the chamber mate-able to the Mu2E beamline. The vendor is not required to provide a stand for the chamber assembly however the provided chamber shall have mounting features for a stand.

Should the vendor need to change any of the reference measurements in Figure 3 through

Figure 6, this can be subject to change with FNAL approval. Note that the chamber depicted in all figures is a placeholder and doesn’t dictate the shape of the vendors design.

Figure 3: Length and Height allocated for goniometer vacuum chamber installation

Figure 4: Width profile of available space

Figure 5: Distance from floor to beam pipe center

Figure 6: Maximum distance chamber can extend into isle from beam pipe center

3.1 Chamber Features

The chamber should not require any additional gauges of instruments outside of the crystal goniometer and its applicable stages/actuators required for operation. The chamber shall contain at least (1) CF Flange for mounting of a vacuum pump and (1) CF Flange for mounting of the goniometer. The chamber shall be constructed in a manner where the goniometer will mount on the aisle side of the chamber so it’s accessible.

Figure 7: Goniometer and Vacuum CF Flanges

It is optional for the vendor to provide the pump itself. Both the upstream and downstream ends of the chamber will utilize a quick connect flange to mate to the beamline, FNAL shall provide the collars to connect the flanges. The vendor shall be responsible for providing the reducer flange pre-installed on the vacuum chamber. The chamber assembly shall include bellows per FNAL drawing F10142162.

Figure 8: Collar for Quick Connect Flanges

Figure 9: Quick Connect Flanges on Chamber assembly

4. Crystal Positioning

The center line of the beam pipe coincides with the central beam orbit; the nominal horizontal location for the crystal shall be offset by 10.5mm from the center line towards the insertion port (Figure 12). The crystal is oriented with the long length vertically, and the bending curvature takes place in the direction transverse to vertical line and bends the beam away from the center line. It’s important to note that this implies the principal bend, see Figure 10. The main beam passes outside the fork of the C-shaped fixture of the crystal in Figure 11, but there will be also part of the beam on the left (inside the fork). Vertically, the center of the crystal should be at the same level as the center of the beam. To ensure that, the vendor is expected to communicate with the crystal vendor to determine the actual geometry of the crystal fixture.

Figure 10. The principal crystal curvature vs auxiliary (visible) curvature.

Figure 11 shows the orientations of the insertion motion, bending direction and the crystal offset direction. The principal curvature is quite small and hardly visible. The auxiliary curvature is obvious and runs around the beam direction. To simplify the definition of the crystal orientation, the crystal vendor will be asked to provide clear instructions for mounting the crystal fixture on the motion device (goniometer).

Figure 11. Isometry and top views of the crystal and fixture orientation with beam.

The goniometer may utilize commercially available components for its design. The goniometer may be a standalone design that will be fixed to the insertion actuator or be integrated as part of the insertion design. The controls for the motion devices are assumed to be an in-house design at Fermilab, if the vendor wants to provide a control system, they should include it in their design proposal pending Fermilab approval.
