About this file

This is a Requirements Document for a National Instruments PXIe system for an additive manufacturing testbed controller, issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The Production Systems Group (PSG) seeks to procure a single PXIe system to replace an outdated 10-year-old system and support the ongoing dual-laser upgrade of the Additive Manufacturing Metrology Testbed (AMMT). The solicitation is a Brand-Name Only acquisition restricted to small businesses, with a NAICS code of 334516 and a small business size standard of 1,000 employees.

The specific requirements include a 9-slot PXIe chassis, a multi-core processor controller compatible with NI LabVIEW, a Kintex-7 FPGA module for signal processing, a multifunction reconfigurable I/O module, and a high-speed digital module. The system will manage powder spreading, dual-laser scanning, high-speed data acquisition, and real-time feedback analysis. Delivery is required within 10 weeks of order receipt, with payment made under Net 30-day terms after full system acceptance. The total procurement will be on a Firm Fixed Price basis, with the contractor responsible for warranty in accordance with standard commercial terms.

NIST Requirements Document

National Instrument PXIe system for additive manufacturing testbed controller

I. Introduction/Background:

The Production Systems Group (PSG) at NIST conducts research in metals-based additive manufacturing to develop and deploy advances in measurement science that enable rapid design-to-product transformation. As part of this research, PSG has developed a highly customized testbed—the Additive Manufacturing Metrology Testbed (AMMT). A National Instruments (NI) PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation (PXIe) system was originally used to implement the AMMT controller. However, the current PXIe hardware is over 10 years old and no longer supports many of the latest software upgrades.

II. Purpose:

To maintain alignment with state-of-the-art technology and to support the ongoing dual-laser upgrade of the AMMT, PSG seeks to procure a new NI PXIe system to improve and modernize AMMT control. The system will be responsible for managing the powder spreading process, dual-laser scanning operations, high-speed data acquisition, and real-time feedback analysis. To maximize reuse of the intellectual property already developed and to ensure compatibility with existing control software, the system must be based on NI PXIe architecture. Therefore, this requirement is for a new PXIe system, including the necessary controller and I/O modules.

III. Minimum Requirements:

The Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing process is highly dynamic, with laser scanning positions updated at 100 kHz and transmitted at 12.8 Mb/s. To support these needs—especially with the upcoming, anticipated, dual-laser upgrade and advanced feedback control—the Contractor shall provide a quantity of one (1) PXIe system (including controller and I/O modules), manufactured by National Instruments Corp located at 11500 N Mopac EXPY, Austin, TX 78759-3504.

The Contractor shall provide a Firm Fixed Price Quotation for the following CLIN(s).

CLIN 0001: Quantity (1) – PXIe system meeting the following minimum specifications, hereby considered the salient essential characteristics of this requirement:

• Chassis: At least 9-slot PXI Express chassis (e.g., PXIe-1092)

• Controller: Multi-core processor (minimum 8 cores), compatible with NI LabVIEW and real-time OS, such as PXIe-8881

• FPGA Module: Kintex-7 (e.g., PXIe-7976R) for low-latency, parallel signal processing

• Multifunction Reconfigurable I/O Module: At least 16 AI / 8 AO with 325T FPGA (e.g., PXIe- 7862)

• High-Speed Digital Module: 16+4 LVDS channels, up to 1 Gbps per channel (e.g., NI 6589)

• Accessories: Connector kits, breakout cables, shielded I/O blocks

This requirement is to obtain quantity one (1) PXIe system on a Brand-Name Only basis, with the following Part Numbers, that is manufactured by National Instruments Corporation, located at 11500 N MoPac Expy, Austin, TX, 78759. Products offered must include the functional specifications of the supply described in this solicitation, which specifically includes the following manufacturer catalogue number, product description and quantity.
