About this file

This statement of requirements describes a solicitation by the National Institute of Standards and Technology for the purchase of a fiber-coupled optical cavity. The solicitation seeks a contractor to provide an optical cavity with a linear, two-mirror design constructed from an ultralow-thermal expansion material. The cavity must have a minimum 5 cm mirror-to-mirror length and fiber coupling with single-mode fiber and FC/APC terminations on both ends. One mirror must be mounted on a piezo actuator with at least 1 micron of travel and 100 Hz closed-loop response. The cavity will be used for gas absorption measurements and must include a gas inlet with VCR fittings and demonstrate a leak rate of less than 1x10^-9 mbar L/s. The mirrors will be provided by NIST centered at 1650 nm and compatible with 1-inch diameter mirrors.

STATEMENT OF REQUIREMENTS

TITLE: Purchase of Fiber-coupled optical cavity

BACKGROUND OF PROPOSED ACQUISITION:

Chemical Sciences Division Optical Measurements Group develops new methodologies and instrumentation for the measurement of gas phase molecular absorption features. These methodologies and instrumentation include novel spectrometers that offer ultra-high sensitivity to trace gases, high fidelity and reproducibility in measured concentrations, and precision gas metrology. The Optical Measurements group is developing next-generation molecular absorption spectrometers, which involves coupling a laser source to a gas absorption cell. The Optical Measurements group has determined that a fiber-coupled optical cavity is a suitable technology for the development of these reference cells.

DESCRIPTION/PURPOSE OF ITEM/SERVICE TO BE ACQUIRED:

The contractor shall provide one (1) optical cavity with the following minimum technical specifications:

1. A linear, two-mirror optical cavity design

2. The cavity shall be constructed from a ultralow-thermal expansion material.

3. Mirrors will be provided by NIST, with a center wavelength of 1650 nm. The cavity shall be compatible with ½” diameter mirrors.

4. Mirrors shall be mounted in a fashion to mitigate mechanical strain on the substrates.

5. All wavelength-dependent components (including windows, anti-reflection coatings, fiber optics) shall be optimized for the 1650 nm center wavelength.

6. The cavity, including fiber coupling, shall not require end-user optical alignment on delivery.

7. A cavity length of 5 cm, mirror to mirror.

8. Fiber-coupling in and out of the optical cavity, with SM fiber of 1 m on each side, with FC/APC termination on each fiber.

9. Mounting for connection to a 1 inch on-center optical bench

10. One mirror shall be mounted on a piezo with the following specifications:

a. Minimum travel of 1 m (greater than 1 free spectral range in frequency space)

b. Minimum 100 Hz closed loop response

11. Gas inlet to fill optical cavity with a user-provided gas

a. The inlet should have ¼” VCR fittings

12. The cavity shall have a demonstrated leak rate of <10-9 torr*liter/sec

Warranty:

The Contractor shall provide, at a minimum, a ninety-day warranty for the equipment. The warranty shall cover all parts and labor. The warranty shall commence upon Government acceptance..

Delivery:

Shall be made FOB destination to:

National Institute of Standards and Technology NIST 100 Bureau Dr.

Gaithersburg, MD. 20899

Normal duty hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with the exception of Federal holidays.
