About this file
This document outlines the technical requirements for a microscope system to be procured by Brooke Army Medical Center. The system must include manual and motorized positioning in six axes, a working distance range of 200-625mm, an electronically controllable second light beam, magnification and focal point memory capabilities, motorized XY movement and focal control point memory accessible from handgrips or foot pedal, an integrated high-definition micro-inspection tool, four integrated fluorescence options, a co-observer tube to prevent movement when tilted, an integrated 4K3D stereo camera for fluorescence-based video angiography with full HD resolution, automatic draping position, and the ability to automatically balance in any head position. The Kinevo 900 Neurosurgical Microscope System from unknown vendor was awarded under contract SPE2DH17D0025 by the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Medical on September 29, 2021 for an unknown amount to meet the technical requirements outlined.

The required microscope system will be used to provide high magnification for microsurgical procedures and will add a measure of safety to complex Ortho-Spine, Neurosurgical, and Ear, Nose, and Throat procedures in BAMC’s Ortho-Spine and Neurosurgery Operating Rooms and must satisfy the following minimum requirements:
a. Manual movement as well as motorized positioning ability from the hand grips in all six (6) axis points, allowing for free movement within the entire working distance range while keeping the focal point in the center of the field of view.
b. Working distance between the front edge of the objective lens and the specimen surface must be able to go up to 625mm and as close as 200mm. BAMC requires this range of use to accommodate the different specialty procedures performed (neurosurgery, plastic surgery, spinal surgery, ENT etc.) at their facility.
c. Electronically controllable second light beam path that reduces shadowing of anatomical landmarks. This second light beam path comes in at an angle to brighten dark canals, or anatomy that would otherwise not be visible.
d. Ability to memorize working distance, magnification, and focus i.e., memorize a focal point.
This allows the surgeon to return to previous anatomical positions during surgery for comparison purposes.
e. 3 XY motorized movement (toggle on handgrips), and memory for FCP (Foot Control Panel).
This gives surgeons flexibility of changing positions utilizing both the FCP and the handgrips during a procedure.
f. Micro-inspection tool featuring High Definition (HD) resolution integrated into the stand without any additional video carts or monitors.
g. Four intraoperative fluorescence options with blue, yellow, and infrared that are fully integrated without increasing the overall dimensions of the microscope head. Provides safety during tumor surgery and spine oncology procedures.
h. Co-observer: when the microscope is tilted laterally the co-observer tube prevents movement which reduces intraoperative rebalancing.
i. Integrated Stereo 4k3D Camera option for fluorescence-based video angiography detecting with Full HD resolution, providing the highest resolution possible.
j. Automatically moves into draping position, this unique feature avoids contamination of the sterile field. It addresses a common finding with microscopes is the ease of contamination.
k. Provides blood flow assessment tool providing analysis of indocyanine green (ICG) based video angiography Data.
l. Automatic balancing of the microscope is possible in any position within the microscope head tilt and swivel movement range.
The Kinevo 900 Neurosurgical Microscope System will be utilized by multiple specialties within the surgical service of the hospital to include Neurosurgery, Ortho-Spine and Ears, Nose and Throat (ENT). This system provides the longest focal length, from 200mm to 650mm the equipment can be used safely for multiple procedures and specialties. The system has a micro-inspection tool that allows the surgeon to see around corners and blind spots. This allows them to focus and move around a structure to visualize the targeted anatomy, reducing risk of injury to both surgeon and patient. This the only product currently available on ECAT or in the commercial market that meets all BAMC’s minimum requirements.
