If rocks or other obstructions are encountered, cut no higher than 6 inches above the obstruction. Limb live trees with a diameter larger than 8 inches to a height of 15 feet above the road surface. Grub all stumps within the roadway and ditch. Fill holes with surrounding native material and equipment compact. Clearing Limits as shown on the Plans.

a. Within stream side management zones/ Riparian Habitat Conservation Areas brush only 8 in DBH or less until designated to limb or cut larger trees.

b. In areas where the slash is to great to be (f) scattered within the designated clear limts of the fill slope may have clear limits adjusted instead of (J) removal to designated locations or (k) piling.

3. Disposal of vegetation 203.05: Brush and slash dispose per (a) scattering and (b) piling Non-saw logs shall be property of contractor or disposed by (a) scattering and (b) piling. Sawlog to be (c) decked for optional small sale to contractor Outside of this contract.

(b) Burn. Government responsible for burning unless otherwise approved.

(c) Bury. Bury debris in trenches or pits in approved areas within the right-of-way when approved. Do not bury debris inside the roadway prism limits, beneath drainage ditches, or in areas subject to freeflowing water.

a. Place debris in alternating layers of 48 inches (1200 millimeters) of debris covered with 24 inches (600 millimeters) of earth material. Distribute stumps, logs, and other large pieces to form a dense mass and minimize air voids. Cover the top layer of buried debris with at least 12 inches (300 millimeters) of compacted earth. Grade and shape the area. Seed and mulch disposal areas on Government property according to Section 625.

(d) (Intentinally left blank)

(e) Windrowing Construction Slash. Place construction slash outside the roadway in neat, compacted windrows approximately parallel to and along the toe line of embankment slopes. Do not permit the top of the windrows to extend above subgrade. Use construction equipment to matt down all material in a windrow to form a compact and uniform pile. Construct breaks of at least 15 feet at least every 200 feet in a windrow. Do not place windrows against trees.

(f) Scattering. Scatter construction slash in designated areas without damaging trees. Limb all logs. Place logs and stumps away from trees, positioned so they will not roll, and are not on top of one another. Limb and scatter other construction slash to reduce slash concentrations. When scattering for erosion control, place construction slash as flat as practicable on the completed slope.

a. Slash shall be bucked to 4' and lopped below 18" both to meet MT slash reduction law and forest insect hazards. Continuous slash mat of more than 12” must be piled for burning by Government. Stumps from 8-in diameter or greater shall be buried outside road prism.

(g) Chipping. Use an approved chipping machine to chip slash longer than 3 feet. Deposit chips on embankment slopes or outside the roadway to a loose depth less than 6 inches. Minor amounts of chips or ground woody material may be permitted within the roadway if they are thoroughly mixed with soil and do not form a layer.

(h) Debris Mat. Use tree limbs, tops, cull logs, split stumps, wood chunks, and other debris to form a mat upon which construction equipment is operated. Place stumps upside down and blend stumps into the mat.

Logs not meeting the Utilization Standards described in Subsection 201.04(c) or 202.04(c) shall be cut to minimum lengths 16.5 feet and decked in designated log deck location.

Merchantable timber not associated with an existing timber sale shall be cut to length meeting the Utilization Standards described in Subsection 201.04(c) or 202.04(c).

Deck logs so that logs are piled parallel to one another; can be removed by standard log loading equipment; will not damage standing trees; will not interfere with drainage, and will not roll. Keep logs in log decks free of brush and soil.

a. Sawlog- Saw‐log quality consists of the following material: those trees not reserved that are 8 inches diameter at breast height outside bark (dbhob) or greater with a minimum length of 16.5 feet to a minimum top end diameter of 5.6 inches diameter inside bark (dib) and a minimum of 1/3 sound wood.

b. Non-Sawlog- are contractors’ property to remove from site or dispose by (f) Scattering and (k) piling

(j) Removal to designated locations. Remove construction slash to designated locations.
