NAVAL MEDICAL RESEARCH UNIT SAN ANTONIO
PERFORMANCE WORK STATEMENT
Service Contract and Preventative Maintenance for the surface acoustic wave (SAW) biosensor
1. Scope of Work
The command mission of Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) is to conduct gap-driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of DoD personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. To accomplish this mission, NAMRU-SA will combine surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology and phage display technique (PDT) to establish a novel method for developing diagnostics against the influenza virus, which is notorious for its rapid mutations, making it difficult to develop diagnostic antibodies against. We aim to produce a diagnostic instrument that provides results in seconds and is portable, inexpensive, and rugged, with minimal development time. Our objectives are to produce small peptides that act as stable molecular recognition substances using PDT and apply them on SAW technology to detect the influenza virus. This approach will also be expanded to detect the COVID-19 virus.

N/A
3. Support Requirements
1. Delivery of technical and manufacturing/fabrication support in pursuit of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) biosensor coupled with phage display technology.
2. Production of an initial report on the current status of company platform with supporting data as it relates to the virus detection using recognition antibodies:
a. Improvement of sensor design with liquid-proof protection and capacitive coupling
b. Biomolecular coating development
c. Preanalytical processing development for clinical specimens
d. Data demonstrating the ability to detect virus in buffer and clinical matrix
e. Considerations for process scale-up: sensor functionalization, optimization, and packaging
3. Develop biomolecular coating with anti-influenza A peptides and generate a standard curve using different titers of influenza virus load in buffered solution.
4. Test influenza virus infused into nasal swab samples to optimize and determine the sensitivity and selectivity of the assay.
