STATEMENT OF NEED

INTRODUCTION:

The mission of the Clinical Center (CC) (defined as Warren Grant Magnuson Bldg (Bldg 10), Ambulatory Care Research Facility (ACRF) and Clinical Research

Center (CRC)) is to provide clinical research servicing the needs of the NIH Intramural Research Program by providing a safe and effective environment for the care and treatment of patients participating in structured biomedical research protocols. It consists of 3.5 million square feet of mixed occupancy space in three congruent buildings on the NIH campus. The Clinical Center (CC) is a 234 bed clinical research hospital. The CC employs approximately 2,000 employees, across 30 different departments. The Clinical Center Complex consists of 3.5 million square feet of mixed occupancy space in three congruent buildings on campus.

The Functional & Applied Biomechanics (FAB) section in the Rehabilitation Medicine Department of the NIH Clinical Center are at the forefront of including mobile brain imaging into motion capture studies. FAB has three active clinical protocols that include fNIRS, EEG, and/or joint (simultaneous) EEG-fNIRS as part of data collection. The existing EEG and fNIRS systems utilized by FAB are 8 years old.

The existing fNIRS data collection system (Techen is aging and cumbersome, and it restricts the type and variety of movements that can be studied. Therefore, there is a need to upgrade to a more mobile fNIRS system to improve data collection capability and quality. This new fNIRS system should be able to act as a standalone fNIRS system, but further should seamlessly integrate with the existing FAB EEG system (Brain Vision actiCAP,) for simultaneous data collection.

Note that the current fNIRS system will need to be retained as well to maintain continuity for data collection on existing protocols.

The EEG caps and electrodes have been upgraded as needed over the past two years and are functioning well. However, the amplifiers and wireless transmission system are outdated. FAB has an EEG system from Brain Vision LLC, called the actiCAP system, which utilizes specialized EEG electrodes that have end-stage amplification to provide robust data collection in our motion capture laboratory setting. This system works very well for FAB so we only need to replace new amplifiers and wireless transmission directly from Brain Vision to continue collecting data.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / SPECIFICATIONS/ SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS:

This is a Brand Name or Equal Requirement.
