Draft STATEMENT OF WORK (SOW)
Motion Capture System
Introduction and Overview
The Functional & Applied Biomechanics Section (FAB) of the Rehabilitation Medicine
Department, Clinical Center, and National Institutes of Health (NIH) currently utilizes a ten-camera passive optical motion capture system from Vicon that was purchased in
2009. The motion capture system is central to all of FAB’s internal and most of our support research protocols, and is the primary reason other institutes and departments refer clinical patients to our lab. The motion capture system is integrated with other hardware and software such as force plates, treadmill, EMG, virtual reality, and custom software for real-time control and feedback.
Background
The motion capture system is the most important research tool utilized by FAB. The current system is nearing ten years of life. There have been some small issues with the current system, and we hope to replace the system now before bigger problems arise. All but one of our internal protocols requires the motion capture system, so downtime would cause significant problems. Technology has also improved over the past ten years so the newer systems should be more accurate, faster processing, and help the staff to be more efficient and productive.
Scope of Work
Each motion capture system consists of cameras, cables, and computers. The current system has ten infrared cameras and two reference video cameras in order to cover the target data collection volume. It may be helpful to either increase the number of cameras and/or the quality in order to have a larger volume for data collection. Each motion capture system has a data collection computer that runs the proprietary software and stores the data from the cameras and auxiliary devices (EMG, force plates, etc). In addition, there may be a separate computer that controls the cameras. The new motion capture system will need to integrate with current hardware and software used in FAB.
Objectives
- Replace the current Vicon motion capture system with Brand Name or Equal
- Maintain current integrated systems (custom real-time treadmill control and custom real-time virtual reality)
Period of Performance
The motion capture system will be purchased and installed at one time, but there will be annual warranty/maintenance for at least five years following purchase. The motion capture system is estimated to begin June 1, 2018 and run twelve months, with four (4) twelve month options to extend the period of performance. Period of Performance is estimated to begin as follows:
Base Period: 6/1/2018 – 5/31/2019
Option Period One (1): 6/1/2019-5/31/2020
Option Period Two (2):6/1/2020-5/31/2021
Option Period Three (3):6/1/2021-5/31/2022
Option Period Four (4): 6/1/2022-5/31/2023
Requirements
The minimum requirements of the motion capture system:
1. Passive optical motion capture system
a. Data acquisition software must integrate all motion capture and analog channels (at least 64 channels) into a C3D file
b. Real-time data capture and feedback display of marker trajectories and analog data
c. Minimum of 8 simultaneous software licenses that may be transferred between computers
2. At least 10 near infrared cameras
a. Able to collect capture volume of 10’ x 10’ x 7’ high
b. At least 4 MP resolution for each camera
c. Max frame rate at full resolution at least 200 frames/sec
d. Ability to capture at least 120 reflective markers at full camera resolution
(5mm, 9mm, and 12mm markers)
e. No visual flash (or disturbance) to the subject during data collection
3. Two reference digital cameras
a. Software should be able to simultaneously capture and integrate two digital video cameras with 3D marker and analog data
b. Video camera files saved directly to data collection computer hard drive
4. Compatible with current hardware/software so that there is minimal work needed from FAB to integrate
a. Real-time output of 3D marker trajectories to interact with Matlab, Labview, and C++ (i.e. Vendor should have developed Matlab API – functions that other software can communicate with the data acquisition software)
Tasks
The contractor shall conduct the following tasks:
1. Deliver motion capture system – the motion capture system may be delivered to the loading dock at the NIH
2. Setup/Optimize system and train staff – the vendor should send their own technician(s) to setup/install the motion capture system. FAB staff may assist in this setup and optimization of camera locations and settings. The vendor may need to train staff on how to use the system and software for data collection.
3. Maintenance/warranty of operations must be included in the annual support and maintenance option periods
4. Upgrades of software and hardware should be included in the annual support and maintenance option periods
