About this file
This document is a limited source justification for the award of a contract by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to an unknown vendor for an unknown amount on September 24, 2021. The contract is to purchase a MACSQuant Tyto cell sorter to be used by the Flow Cytometry Unit of the Research Technologies Branch at the National Institutes of Health. The cell sorter will provide high-speed cell analysis capabilities for downstream applications such as single cell genomics and CRISPR technologies. It will allow investigators to obtain very pure and viable cell populations and bacteria for such downstream uses. The new equipment will also be important for conducting research on SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19. The justification cites the need for equipment with improved purity, viability and resolution capabilities compared to current cell sorting tools, in order to reliably support flow cytometry analysis and sorting performed by the Research Technologies Branch for intramural researchers at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Name of Action: NIH Class Justification and Approval (J&A)
The purpose of this requirement is to purchase critically needed supplies and services to respond to the COVID-19 global outbreak. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization
(WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic, and on March 13, 2020, the
United States issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring the COVID-19 outbreak to be a national emergency with a continuation of the original emergency on February 24, 2021.
Additionally, all fifty states and the District of Columbia have declared emergencies due to
COVID-19. NIH’s mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability.
Return to: Frederick Little after SPE approval.
