Statement of Requirements

Wind Profiling SODAR Department of Meteorology Naval Postgraduate School

1.0 Background/Introduction:

The Department of Meteorology (MR) at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is involved in research related to the atmospheric effects on electromagnetic and electro-optical (EM/EO) wave propagation in the boundary layer. NPS/MR requires instrumentation to remotely profile wind speed/direction, turbulence intensity and CT^2 structure parameter in the lowest 1000 m of the atmosphere. These variables affect the EM/EO propagation in the atmosphere. A Sonic/Sound Detection and Ranging (SODAR) wind profiler provides these needed quantities to characterize the atmosphere to which we can analyze the effects on EM/EO propagation. The SODAR wind profiler will be used in the field and needs to be easily transportable.

2.0 Minimal Technical Requirements/Salient Characteristics:

Software:

1. Software license is not locked to single computer; i.e. multiple computers can use software at the same time

2. Software is able to post-process and re-average raw FFT spectrum data to recalculate wind data.

3. All data processing and display modules are included and available, i.e. no software features are locked from the user.

4. Includes real-time plotting software to display user-selectable output data.

5. Time resolution of 1 min or less. Increase averaging period to improve data quality.

Data Output and Real Time Display Variable (including, but not limited to):

1. Raw FFT spectra output.

2. Wind speed and direction, 2-d wind components (u, v).

3. Vertical component of wind (w).

4. Standard deviations of 3-d components of wind (sigma u,v,w)

5. Wind shear

6. Turbulent kinetic energy

7. Eddy dissipation rate

8. CT^2 (derived from calibration/model).

9. Backscatter Hardware:

1. Sonic/Sound Detection and Ranging (SODAR) wind profiler.

2. Achieve 1000 m altitude range in ideal atmospheric conditions consistently (i.e. sufficient backscattering conditions)

3. Lowest range gate is no higher than 30 m

4. At lowest 10 range gates provides >90% data availability. Data can be post-processed and re-averaged to meet data availability.

5. Capable of at least 100 range gates or 10 m vertical resolution

6. Horizontal wind speed range: 0 - 50 m/s

7. Vertical wind speed range: -10 – +10 m/s

8. Accuracy:

a. Horizontal Wind Speed: No greater than 0.3 m/s, in any conditions

b. Vertical Wind Speed: No greater than 0.1 m/s, in any conditions

c. Wind Direction: No greater than 1.5 deg, in any conditions

9. Compact, transportable acoustic array antenna

a. Weight < 35 kg

b. Size < 1 m x 1 m x 0.25 m

10. Installed heaters in antenna for cold-weather use, includes heater power supply.

11. SODAR is upgradeable for radio acoustic sounding system (RASS) option to measure virtual temperature profiles. (RASS option not included in this procurement). Additional software is not needed when upgraded.

12. Communication, signal, and power cables are included.

13. Power requirements:

a. 120VAC; 60 Hz power input (US)

b. Antenna power consumption, average: < 100 W

14. Quantity two (2) acoustic enclosures:

a. One for permanent installation. Setup includes stand, electronic compartments, and acoustic enclosure panels.

b. One for temporary field installations. Collapsible, transportable acoustic enclosure (weight < 10 kg, size < 1.75 m x 1.75 m x 1.0 m). Enclosure is comprised of panels that mount directly to the acoustic antenna.
