I .7 Environmental requirements
Protect the unit from direct sunlight, intense heat radiation, or ultraviolet radiation by loosely covering the unit with an opaque, reflecting type plastic film or similar material. Make sure air is allowed to circulate around the unit.
It is preferable to store the unit indoors, well protected from the weather. The temperature in the storage area should ideally be 60' F to 70" F with a relative humidity of 70% or lower.
CAUTION: NEVER STORE THE UNIT IN AN AREA WHERE THE
TEMPERATURE IS AT 32'F OR LOWER CONTINUOUSLY
FOR EXTENDED PERIODS.
5 CHANGE A
All potential sources of Ozone, such as operating electric motores, or welding equipment, should be removed from the storage area to preclude Ozone attack on gaskets.
1.8 List of items furnished
I The heat exchanger is a package one piece assembly as shown by Figure 9, Table 3, and Table 4 in the back of this manual. There is no cabling involved.
1.9 Storage data
If the SUPERCHANGER plate and frame heat exchanger is to be placed in storage for an extended period of time, the procedures listed below must be followed:
a. If the unit has been recently shipped from our factory and is unused, disregard statements b, c and d and follow instructions e through j.
b. If the unit has been used and long term storage is required, it must be completely drained. Remove the shroud and let the unit cool to ambient temperature. This is a single pass unit (all nozzles are on the stationary end frame) and it therefore is self draining. Simply vent at the upper nozzle location and drain from the lower nozzle for each side individually. Before opening the plate pack, wipe off the exterior surfaces to make sure no fluids or debris fall onto the plate pack.
c. Open the plate pack and thoroughly clean the unit internally and externally. Dry the unit. (Blowing dry, hot air at approximately 150°F on all areas is an excellent method.)
2.3 Tightening the plate pack
Tightening sequence
I CAUTION: DO NOT TIGHTEN THE EXCHANGER WHEN IT IS FULL
O F WATER, UNDER PRESSURE OR OPERATING.
The tightening bolts should be tightened uniformly and the plate pack length checked at all bolt locations on both sides. Referring to Fig. 3 tighten I , 2, 3 and 4 by hand as much as possible and then wrench tighten in the order of I , 2, 3 and 4 approximately I/”. Follow with the remaining locations in the sequence indicated.
Tightening limits (See Paragraph 1.6, “Tightening Dimensions”)
Tighten by this procedure to the plate pack dimension shown on the assembly drawing. This dimension is the distance between the facing surfaces of the “S” and “E” frames. This dimension is also on the exchanger data plate. The length should be checked with a metal ruler.
In case leakage occurs when the plate pack is at the minimum dimension, additional tightening by up to .6 1” is allowable.
CAUTION: TIGHTENING BEYOND THIS MIN. DIMENSION MAY
CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE PLATES AT THEIR CONTACT
POINTS.
FIG. 3
BOLT TIGHTENING SEQUENCE
t I I J
Tighten the bolts in the order indicated and per para. 2.3.
Loosen in groups in reverse order and per para. 3.2.
3. Servicing
3.1
3.2
3.3
Shutting the exchanger down.
CAUTION: THE PRESSURE OF BOTH LIQUIDS SHOULD BE
SIMULTANEOUSLY DECREASED GRADUALLY WHEN
SHUTTING DOWN A UNIT.
NEVER OPEN AN EXCHANGER WHEN HOT. IT SHOULD
BE COOLED TO ROOM TEMPERATURE BEFORE OPENING
TO PREVENT LOOSENING OF THE GASKETS.
Disassembly Procedures.
Fully loosen bolt number 9, IO, 1 1 , and 12 sequentially by use of a wrench (See Fig. 3)
Next loosen bolt numbers 5 , 6, 7 and 8 sequentially.
Finally, loosen numbers I , 2, 3, and 4 sequentially and remove all bolts from the frame.
Roll the movable “E” frame all the way to the support column.
Removal of Plates. (see pages 16 and 17 also)
There are 3 removable 6” long sections bolted into the bottom of the upper guide bar. Remove the one nearest to the “E” frame.
Tilt the first plate on an angle so it can be withdrawn from the frame. Additional plates are removed similarly. As removal continues, it will save time to take out another 6” section from the middle of the upper guide bar.
I t is preferable, whenever practical, to clean and/or inspect the plates one by one by separating them in the frame rather than removing them.
CAUTION: CARE SHOULD BE EXERCISED WHEN HANDLING
PLATES IN THE OPEN PORTHOLE AREA. ALTHOUGH ALL
PLATES ARE DEBURRED, INCLUDING THE PORTHOLE
AREA, THE EDGES MAY BE SHARP AND RESULT IN CUT
HANDS IF GLOVES ARE NOT USED.
3.4 PLATE DESIGNATIONS
SUPERCHANGER units are designed so that fluids entering on the right side of the plate always flow out on the right side (A) and fluids entering on the left side always flow out on the left side (B) (Figure 5) .
“B” PLATE 7
“A” PLATE -/
FIG. 4
PLATE DESIGNATIONS
Note how the letters A and B can be visualized in each plate based on its orientation.
3.5 PLATE ARRANGEMENT
A A or BB (placing A on A or B on B) must be avoided because the two different fluids must be on opposite sides of each plate in order that effective heat transfer be accomplished. By mistakenly arranging plates AA or BB, the unit will short circuit and there will be a loss of heat transfer.
However, because of the unique gasket and hole combination design. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE for side “A” fluid to mix with side “B” fluid even if the plates are arranged AA or BB.
FIGURE 5
SUPERCHANGER FLOW DIAGRAM
Facing the gasketed side of the plate, if the fluid flows in and out on the right side, the plate is called an “A” plate.
A plate is termed “A” or “B” depending upon gasket orientation. An “A” plate becomes a “B” plate when reversed (turned upside down) and vice versa. Figure 4 shows the difference between an “A” and “B” plate. NOTE: Every other plate must be rotated 180 degrees; i.e. A-B-A-B, in order to prevent short circuiting and loss of heat transfer. ALSO NOTE: The plate adjacent to the stationary frame is called a “D” plate and has a special gasket arrangement (see page 21 item 10).

1 GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 Introduction
The SUPERCHANGER plate and frame heat exchanger consist of corrugated titanium heat transfer plates with NBR elastomeric gaskets around the perimeter and the corner ports. These plates are supported and located by upper and lower guide bars. They are compressed between the stationary and movable?*frames by the tightening bolts. See FIG 1, Table 1, and FIG 2.
. . 1.2 Purpose . .
The purpose of the heat exchangers is to cool fresh water by use of sea water. Fresh water is pumped through the spaces between every other plate in one directgon while sea water is pumped through alternate spaces in the opposite direction.- - _ _ c - : -

Each plate has a molded one piece boundary gasket which is glued into the continuous gasket groove in each plate. The liquid flowing on the surface of each plate flows on the inside of each boundary gasket. If one of the liquids should leak beyond a boundary gasket, i t will flow to the outside of the unit. thus preventing any possible intermix. Each porthole gasket contains four bleed passages allow-ing this to be accomplished.

- . 5 PLATE.ARRANGEMENT . . .
AA or BB (placing A on A or B on B) must be avoided because the two different fluids must be on opposite sides of each plate in order that effective heat transfer be ac-complished. By mistakenly arranging plates AA or BE. the unit will short circuit and there will be a loss of heat transfer. How-ever, because of the unique gasket and hole combination desisn. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE f o j side "A" fluid to mix with side "B" fluid even if the plates are arranged AA or BB.
Facing the gasketed side of the plate. if the fluid flows in and out on the right side, the plate is called an "A" plate.
'A- plate js Ttermed "A" or "B" depending ilpon-Aj-aaSkef orie'ntation. An "A" plate be- Eornes'a "B"'plate when reversed (turned upside down) and vice versa Figure 4 shows the difference between an "A" and "B" plate. NOTE: Every other plate must be rotated 180 degrees; i.e. A-B-A-6, in order to prevent short circuiting and loss of heat transfer. ALSO NOTE: The plate adjacent to the stationary frame is called a"D" plate and has a special gasket arrangement (see page 21i tem 10).
