This section provides a representative description of the CNC lathe axes for reference and referral.

Spindle: The part being processed attaches to the spindle/chuck and is rotated inside the system enclosure. When the spindle is used as a controlled positioning axis (i.e., interpolated motion with the turret) it is the C-axis (rotation about the Z-axis).

Turret: The cutting tools (stationary or live tooling) are attached to the turret. The turret moves inside the enclosure (X, Y, Z) positioning the tooling in relation to the workpiece.

Z-axis: The axis parallel to the spindle axis

X-axis: Axis perpendicular to the Z-axis

Y-axis: Axis perpendicular to X-axis & Z-axis

Live Tooling: Attaches to turret and can have the live tooling rotating axis parallel to the X-axis or Z-axis. Examples of live tooling are drills, reamers, cutters, etc.

The system shall function, without failure, for the duration of this test period. If a failure occurs during the test period, repairs shall be immediately resolved by the Contractor, and the tests shall be restarted from the first test. Three failures without completion of the test period shall be considered cause for rejection of the system. For the purpose of this test, a “failure” is defined as any equipment malfunction which requires remedial action to restore the system to full operation in accordance with contract specifications.
