ON when BAND_SEL is TTL 0, OFF when TTL 1

If the switched gate pinch-off scheme (6.3.2) is chosen, the supply shall not require a

BAND_SEL signal, and shall provide a single drain supply output:

5.1. Packaging. For acquisition purposes, the packaging requirement shall be as specified in the contract or order. When packaging of material is to be performed by DoD or in-house contractor personnel, these personnel need to contact the responsible packaging activity to ascertain packaging requirements. Packaging requirements are maintained by the Inventory

Control Point’s packaging activities within the Military Service or Defense Agency, or within the military service’s system commands. Packaging data retrieval is available from the managing

Military Department’s or Defense Agency’s automated packaging files, CD-ROM products, or by contacting the responsible packaging agency.

6. NOTES

(This section contains information of a general or explanatory nature.)

6.1. Parameters to be determined at the SSDBA PDR. Table 6-1 lists the parameters in this specification that are not known at this writing, but that will be established at the Preliminary

Design Review (PDR) for the Solid-State Dual-Band Amplifier (SSDBA).

The SSDBA uses power-combined arrays of monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC) amplifiers. At this writing, the MMICs have not been selected, so their power supply parameters are yet to be determined. The MMICs will be specified by the date of the SSDBA’s Preliminary

Design Review (PDR), at which time the following parameters of the supply specifications will be determined:

Table 6-1: Parameters to be determined at or before Preliminary Design Review for Solid-

State Dual-Band Amplifier iring BAND_SEL input, and e pinch-off (requiring VDD supply

6.2. MMIC biasing and sequencing. The MMIC arrays in the SSDBA receive drain bias voltage from the supply VDD output (or VDD_HI and VDD_LO outputs), adjustable 23.5 V to

28.5 V, and individually-adjusted gate bias voltages from the bias modules. The bias modules derive the gate voltages from the supply VGG output, -5.0 V at 1.5 A.

The SSDBA MMICs are depletion-mode devices. At zero gate bias and active drain bias, they will draw self-destructive drain current. As the gate bias is made more negative, the drain current decreases, falling to a negligible leakage current when the gate is below pinch-off voltage. At some active gate bias between 0 V and pinch-off, the drain current is at its optimum value for RF amplification. The gate bias giving the desired drain current is different for each individual MMIC.

The supply provides a regulated gate voltage (VGG) of -5.0 V to the SSDBA’s gate-bias circuits.

This voltage is below the pinch-off of the type of MMICs used. The gate-bias circuit generates an individually calibrated gate voltage for each MMIC.

To prevent destruction of the MMICs, drain bias must never be applied without gate bias. The supply must turn gate bias on before drain bias, and leave gate bias on while drain bias turns off.

The 20 ms delay specified here is somewhat arbitrary. For the other supply outputs, timing of turn-on and turn-off is not critical.

6.3. Dual-Band Operation. The SSDBA contains arrays of two types of MMIC amplifier, with one array amplifying low-band signals and the other array amplifying high-band signals. At this writing, the MMIC types are not known. Available power from the towline is not sufficient for the transmitter to amplify low-band signals and high-band signals simultaneously. Under control of the BAND_SEL signal from the Telemetry board, the transmitter transmits high-band signals if BAND_SEL is TTL 1, or low-band signals if BAND_SEL is TTL 0.

Two possible schemes for band selection are switched drain bias, and switched gate pinch-off. A band selection scheme will be chosen at or before the SSDBA PDR.

6.3.1. Switched drain bias scheme. The supply shall have two switched drain-bias outputs, VDD_HI to the high-band MMICs and VDD_LO to the low-band MMICs. The supply shall respond to BAND_SEL by applying drain voltage to the active MMIC array, and removing drain voltage from the inactive MMIC array. When BAND_SEL changes state, the supply shall first remove drain bias from both arrays, and then apply drain bias to the selected array after a delay of ~20 ms. The SSDBA plays no part in band selection, and does not need a BAND_SEL input.

6.3.2. Switched gate pinch-off scheme. The supply plays no part in band selection, and does not need a BAND_SEL input.. The supply shall provide a single drain bias output VDD to both

MMIC arrays. The BAND_SEL signal will control the SSDBA’s gate-bias circuit. The gate-bias circuit shall apply active bias to the gates of the selected MMIC array, and pinch off the gates of the inactive MMICs, making their drain currents negligible. When BAND_SEL changes state, the gate-bias circuit shall first pinch off the gates of both arrays, and then activate the selected array after a delay of ~20 ms.

6.4. Low ripple required on Gate Bias Supply and Optical Receiver Supply. The optical receiver carries the RF signal at its lowest level in the transmitter. Ripple in the gate bias to the power amplifiers will distort the RF signal. In both places, low ripple voltage is required for signal fidelity. The other supplies are drain supplies, whose ripple has less effect on the RF signal.

STATEMENT OF WORK FOR DUAL BAND TRANSMITTER POWER SUPPLY

1 SCOPE. This Statement of Work defines the effort required for the design, engineering development, fabrication, and test of three Dual Band Transmitter Power Supply Prototypes.

1.1 Background. The Airborne Transmitter program has been initiated to design, develop, and produce an airborne transmitter that can emit in two frequency bands. The Dual Band Transmitter Power

Supply (DBTPS) is a component of that system, accepting high-voltage power from an input power line and converting it to DC voltages powering the other components. The other principal components are the

Solid-State Dual-Band Amplifier (SSDBA), the forward and rear antenna assemblies, and the telemetry and control circuit board. The effort here described is intended to obtain for the US Naval Research

Laboratory:

a. a design of a power supply that meets the requirements of the Specification for Dual-Band

Transmitter Power Supply;

b. an Engineering Development Model (EDM);

c. three Prototypes; and

d. design documents and test data for the EDM and any Prototypes.

All tasks shall be completed no later than 24 months after contract award (ACA).

2 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

2.1 Specification for the Dual Band Transmitter Power Supply
