Failure.

Purpose
The B-1B aircraft employs mainly SMDC as the method for communication throughout the egress system. A Mode Selector is affixed to each seat in the aircraft. While in Automatic Mode, the seats will be sequenced automatically when a single ejection handle is pulled. If a seat is in manual mode, it will not eject in sequence with the other seats nor will it initiate the ejection sequence for other seats. In
2014, CED experienced a Mode Selector LAT failure on S/N 002892 from L/N CHG14D001-051. According to the failure notification and analysis report (No.14-012), “A high order output was observed at the port corresponding with explosive train HNS charge Port 1 Auto, however detonation transfer stopped between Ports 1 and 3, preventing output at Ports 3 and 4.” As a result, CED incorporated manufacturing improvements and refurbished the remainder of the lot.
A similar failure occurred during OA testing of S/N 2790 from L/N CHG12D001-048 at CED. As this lot was produced prior to the manufacturing improvements that were implemented in 2014 the government proposes the following Objectives.
Objectives
1. Request CED investigates the failure of S/N 2790 and determine if the root cause of the failure is the same as S/N 002892.
