Section C - Descriptions and Specifications
SPECIFICATION TO REMANUFACTURE/RESTORE THE 2350
HORSEPOWER DC MOTOR AT THE HELICOPTER BLADE TEST
FACILITY
FLEET READINESS CENTER EAST CHERRY
POINT, NORTH CAROLINA
1.0 Scope.
1.1 General. This specification describes the minimum requirements for removal, transportation, remanufacture/restoration, reinstallation and acceptance testing of the 2350 HP Teco-Westinghouse DC motor currently installed in the helicopter blade test facility, Fleet Readiness Center East, MCAS Cherry Point, NC
28533. The expected result of the restoration is to return the motor as close as possible to original motor operating condition and life expectancy with no loss of current capability.
1.2 Background. The Helicopter Blade Test Facility (whirl tower) at Fleet Readiness Center East (FRCE) is used to dynamically balance and trim helicopter blades that are overhauled at the depot. Blades are tested by attaching them to a three-hub rotor head and rotating them at a specified rpm, varying their pitch angle, and measuring their resultant flight characteristics. The 2350 HP vertical shaft motor is powered by a
Reliance Electric Co. 12-pulse solid state drive system and directly drives the three-hub rotor head. The approximate weight of the motor is 77700 pounds. The motor is installed outdoors, protected from direct exposure to rain, but is subject to ambient temperature and humidity conditions. Recent equipment failures indicate a breakdown in insulation resistance during high moisture/humidity conditions. The whirl tower facility is surrounded by a retaining fence and chain link security fence. The retaining fence extends from approximately 12 ft above grade (except at the chain link access gate) to approximately 42 ft above grade, with a radius of approximately 55 ft from the center of the motor. The opening at the chain link access gate is 25 ft wide with approximately 16 ft of clearance from grade to the bottom of the retaining fence.
