About this file

This is an educational activity book produced by Michigan's State Fire Marshal's office designed to teach children and families about life safety and fire prevention measures. The document serves as a comprehensive guide for residential fire safety awareness, covering essential topics including proper placement and quantity of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detector installation, emergency escape planning, and family preparedness protocols. The activity book includes interactive elements such as coloring activities, planning worksheets, and checklists that prompt families to assess their current safety status, develop evacuation routes, establish meeting places, and document emergency contact information. Key instructional components include guidance on smoke alarm placement (bedrooms, outside sleeping areas, and each level of the home), carbon monoxide source identification and detector positioning, escape plan development with emphasis on multiple exit routes and door closure strategies, and monthly testing protocols scheduled for the first day of each month.

The document includes supplementary resources and references for extended learning through platforms such as ymiclassroom.com, Sparkyschoolhouse.org, and MIPrevention.org, as well as links to Michigan Medicine health resources. The activity book emphasizes critical life safety concepts including the two-minute escape window from residential fires, the dangers of toxic smoke inhalation, the importance of practicing escape plans three times annually under varying conditions, and the dangers of re-entry into burning structures. Special attention is given to vulnerable populations, including elderly family members and neighbors, with specific checklists to ensure they possess working alarms, detectors, and viable escape plans. The resource appears designed for use in classroom settings and direct family distribution, with attribution to Kevin J. Sehlmeyer and coordination with Michigan's fire safety education initiatives.
