SECTION 01110
(Rev. 03/2012)
SUMMARY OF WORK
PART 1 GENERAL
1 .1 DESCRIPTION
A. The section of roadway between MP 409 to MP 441 has several areas with exposed rock faces. Over the years debris has fallen and along the rock face and is encroaching towards the roadway. The purpose of this project is to remove the fallen and loose debris and to reestablish the original ditch line and slopes.
B. Once the trees within the project limits have been removed, light grading shall be required to re-establish the slopes and surfaces along the rock face. Stabilized Shoulder Material per
Section 02912 shall be used to fill any depressions to required slope and grade. Once all areas within the mowing area are graded to re-establish the original slopes and landscape surfaces, the areas that are bare shall be seeded and mulched per the following specification Section
02921. Straw or erosion control blankets will be required in the disturbed/seeded areas.
Drainage inlets, ditches and culverts shall be protected from sedimentation using straw wattles until vegetation is re-established. In areas where the backslope of the ditch cannot be easily determined a grade of 5:1 shall be utilized. The backslope of the ditch shall be extended until it reaches the existing rock face.
C. Care shall be taken when working around existing paved areas, concrete ditches, and inlets.
Any damage to the asphalt, paved ditches, or inlets will require repair or replacement.
D. The smaller loose debris remaining on the rockface will need to be removed with a broom or blower prior to soil stabilization and grassing.
E. The six areas identified will be included in the firm fixed price contract. The project will start at Area 6 and work south toward Area 1. The quantities provided in subsequent sections and on the price proposal form are estimates only. The contractor is responsible for verifying the quantities prior to provided price proposals for the work. The firm fixed price quoted shall include removal of fallen material, removing lose material from the rock face, final grading of the shoulder and ditch, seeding the disturbed areas, and placing straw over the disturbed areas.
The firm fixed price quoted shall also include maintenance of traffic, mobilization and other incidental items required to complete the work.
F. All work will be performed under a single contract.
G. The Parkway will NOT be closed to the public during construction. It is anticipated that this work will involve use of a portion of the roadway in order to load debris into hauling vehicles and remove it from the parkway. The contractor shall utilize shoulder closures or one-lane closures in accordance with
Section 01599 and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Standard Drawing numbers 635-6 and 635-
10 (Sheet Numbers TCP1 and TCP 2).
Necessary traffic control personnel and signage for all shoulder, single-lane or full road closures shall be the responsibility of the contractor.
1 .2 LOCATIONS
A. The work is located as follows. The COR will mark the beginning and end of each section in the field prior to start of work.
Area 1: A 440 LF section at Milepost 410.9 on the South side of the Hwy 50 access ramp in Tennessee. The estimated quantity for this area is 17 CY.
Area 2: A 400 LF section at Milepost 410.9 on the North side of the Hwy 50 access ramp in Tennessee. The estimated quantity for this area is 15 CY.
Area 3: A 570 LF section between mileposts 428.05 and 428.2 in Tennessee. The estimated quantity for this area is 64 CY.
Area 4: A 520 LF section between mileposts 428.65 and 428.75 in Tennessee. The estimated quantity for this area is 58 CY.
Area 5: A 570 LF section at Garrison Creek between mileposts 427.1 and 427.5 in
Tennessee. The estimated quantity for this area is 253 CY.
Area 6: A 835 LF section between mileposts 440.9 and 441.1 in Tennessee. The estimated quantity for this area is 174 CY. It is noted that there are some very large boulders within this section, estimated to be between 2 and 5 tons each
